I have a cut set. We cut them at work years ago to fit a specific area. We had a safety audit and they failed due to being cut so I was charged to dispose of the, I did not add any additional bracing, but am also nowhere near the rated capacity. It is worth noting the tops were not used at all, just the bottom section.

I did this. Went from 18' long to 12'. I cut out a diagonal brace, kept it, then added a 2" channel to replace the lost integrity at the top of the 12' one. Then put the diagonal back in. All the welding done with stick 1/8" rod 6011. It worked great. I haven't used the remainder yet, but the cutoffs are suitable to make 2 new uprights with some careful cutting to match the slot heights. Should be a no brainer for you to do what you want.

I've cut them. In a couple cases I added the bracing back and in another I didn't need to, I cut it down to a horizontal brace on each side.

When you cut them you have to be careful where you cut them if you are going to reuse the top sections. You want the holes to be a consistent height off the ground for compatibility

I have cut pallet rack uprights down to make a workbench. Just cut out the diagonal bracing, cut them to the height you want, and weld the bracing back in. My welding *****, so Im sure they are not as strong as they were, but it works for my purpose.

They make great work benches. I used 3/4 plywood for the base, then covered that with oak plywood and some polyurethane. Completely solid and nice workspace. The lower cross beams are still completely adjustable. I choose to have a lower section for the drill press and grinder, but can easily change that too. This section pictured is 30 feet.

I have another section that is about 40 feet. Some of these uprights are 9 ft (under the loft) and some are 15 feet. I also have one section that I cut the flange off the crossbeam, shortened the crossbeam, and welded the flange back on. I had to do this so the pallet rack uprights would span a man door.

I couldn't do orange and green, so I painted them red.

Its really up to your imagination. You can modify pallet rack systems to fit your needs and they are better and stronger than what you can buy at a box store.
