I have a Rigid 12R set for cutting threads and have never had to cut anything larger than 1'' so far... Until today! 1.25'' Black iron pipe.... Broke two of the cutters. replaced all four.. Still really hard to make good threads. The threads seem to pull and tear... Using lots of oil... Whats up? Where am I going wrong? Thanks!!

Re: Cutting theads?

be sure the cutter is free from swarf even if it means cutting say 2 threads taking the cutter off cleaning the swarf and then putting it back on

Re: Cutting theads?

maybe its the pipe?.............i had some 1/2" pipe years ago that i couldn't get a good thread on.
You can't use too much oil, maybe go slow and back it up and keep the cutters clean.
who knows, take a pc to the hardware or hd and see what kind of threads they get.

2nd that, I had a huge problem trying to thread some Asian pipe, took me a while to figure out why I was getting all types of leaks, the pipe was oblong . If you have imported pipe return it and go to a supply house and get the good stuff.

Chinese pipe doesn't thread worth a damn with a pipe threader but it's possible to cut perfectly good threads in the same pipe on a lathe.

I recommend buying some USA pipe. Wheatland stuff is good.

If it is big box store pipe, it is hard and difficult to thread.. Did you use thread cutting oil ? Like Ridgid ??

Yep it's the imported pipe been fighting this sh't for the last few years.
Try slip fit steel pipe and fittings you have to turn the ends down on the pipe to get it to fit. welding this stuff is the pits.
