Current LED recommendations

Hi All

just finishing my garage. 24x22x9.5'. one half is for car, other half for woodworking. Trying to decide on lighting. Would like to do it for about $125

Any suggestions for current LED offerings?

Thanks

Do you want plug-in lights or hardwired? The Costco plug-in shop lights are pretty darned bright. 4 can be had for $125 or so, with no extra money out of pocket for wiring or mounting hardware.

Looks too good to be true! 10 4ft LED lights for $130???

I've read numerous posts of folks using them..
One guy buying them has bought over 700 or 800 of them..

I'm still on the fence about them, i'm going to make a trip to Sams club over the weekend and see what they have.

what I have noticed through several posts is it takes more of the ebay lights because they are single strip lights instead of double strip lights. so it takes twice as many ebay lights to light the same space as the double strip lights. say it takes 4 or 5 standard t8 fixtures with retro fit leds to light "x" amount of space it will take 8 to 10 of the ebay lights to light the same area.

I'm more than likely using the ebay lights for the price... I bought 2 cooper/metalux t8 dual bulb fixtures for $12 and looked at retrofit led bulbs and they simply cost too much, like $20plus each locally.. Figuring the ebay lights are $13 each even 4 of them are still cheaper than retrofitting led bulbs in the t8 fixtures..

Look around, there are a few on eBay with the same part#. I just ordered a set.

They can be hard wired or plugged in to anoi outlet.

Thanks! I ordered 10 and if I like them I will order 10 more. With the plug in setup they are using, I assume if they are hard wired they need a junction box? They do not look to like floressents how the wires enter the fixture itself. Maybe outlet boxes are the better choice......?

friend of mine is an electrician, he said he would mount the outlet box and get some kind of clamp, and drill out a solid outlet cover and mount the clamp to pass the cable through... I would assume the clamp hes talking about is some type of romex clamp..

Bummer, they are sold out.....
Edit: how are these to be wired?

seems like they update the listing every few days, I looked last week and they were sold out at several different times but the next day or two they would have more available.. The same seller has several other listings also.

No need for that. You can get box covers with 1/2 inch knockout and/or clamp

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Steel-City-4-in-Square-Box-Flat-Cover-50-Case-52C6-50R/202595776

but I'd bring it out of side of a regular box (lots of styles available):

then use a 1/2 to flex fitting. something like these (would have to check cable size, but lots of these types of connections:

Thanks guys. I THINK I know how I am going to do this. I am going to use one of these for two rows of lights
http://www.homedepot.com/p/Carlon-1...ox-Case-of-5-E381DWR/202203328?keyword=e381dw

It will be surface mounted to the bottom of a truss. The 14-2 romex will come in the back side and will be split into a line coming out of each end using again 14/2 romex and secured using these in the three holes
http://www.homedepot.com/p/Halex-3-...3001rw&cm_mmc=CJ-_-6147012-_-11210757&cj=true
, but at the end of the romex where it connects to the led, it will be soldered, and shrink wrapped to one of these
http://www.ebay.com/itm/T5-T8-Tube-...4672fa&pid=100338&rk=7&rkt=17&sd=301486796674
then out the other side of the light will be two of the above connectors with romex between the connectors. Now I know romex is not supposed to be surface mounted, but don't see how else I can run these since the connectors are so short, and any others you buy on ebay are almost as much as the led's themselves. Would conduit be a must for something like this?

Will something like this pass an electrical inspection?

Does anyone know how many of these you can run with the double sided plugs? The wires are only 18 gauge. Not sure how much power you can run through 18 gauge 120v service. On the end of the clover shaped plug it says 2.5 amps. So if I go 120 (volts) x 2.5 (amps for plug) =300watts or 16.66 tubes (18watt per tube) Seems like a lot of light on that small of a wire?

I've been on the hunt for "Bang for the buck" LED's...haven't found em yet. Each style I try has some sort of downfall....

I tried 2 of the integrated LED's like what is being discussed here...the mounting & wiring style left me not impressed at all, not satisfactory for my tastes, but figured it was worth a try so I bought 2 and put em in my basement...light output is fine, but on mine I have the clear covers, and I can see a "Rainbow" color effect on the floor...color rendering *****. I might try a Milky cover to see...

Next up on my agenda is to get t8 LED replacement tubes...actually reminds me I have a fixture which I need to do before momma yells at me again...

All in all, so far thru all my experimentation, my favorite light/bang for the buck is the T5H0 fixture I got. I would put a whole mess of them in, but I almost feel more future proof with the T8's...if the T8/LED Retrofit Bulbs pan out good, then that's what I will be installing in my garage..
