Those are actually really good. The only issue with prying them out is due to the Case of the Transaxle usually being Aluminum (All yoo min eeeeum) and prone to damage or cracking. You just have to be careful any route you go.

I usually try to push in as far as you can go to get slack then pull really hard. Most of the time it will pop the CV off of the Circlip holding it on. Not all the time though. Usually my next step is to have someone pry while I am pulling.

This is of course only if they are shot and are going to be replaced as sometimes doing this will make them come apart.

Great link to a great Tool! A must have if you do this on a daily basis.

I have the kent-moore tool that was designed for the pontiac vibe (toyota). It works excellent on a lot of other cars as well and no risk of damaging anything. Those wedges work ok, but you have to be careful and on most cars you can't even get access to use them.

Your right about it being a pain. I had to remove the left axle on my 08 and couldn't get it with a pry bar. Pulled out the factory service manual and it says use a slide hammer with a hook attachment. Those ball joints are also a pain to remove.

On my '89 Probe I didn't have much trouble with the original one, but the rebuilt ones were much harder. I have heard that was because the wrong circlip came on the rebuilt ones. I was finally able to get the last one attacking from above with a long chisel. I would switch from one side to the other to avoid misalignment.

Autozone rents all the tools u need (for free). One is a U shaped tool that goes around the end of the CV on the trans side and the other is a slide hammer that attaches to it. Three strikes and out it comes. I could never understand why people struggle and take so much frustration when attempting to remove CV joints trying to use the wrong tools. The fact is that for this job u need a slide hammer, other ways risk damage that could have been avoided and inflict frustration. Heres the link:

Some of those CV axles are in a recessed area on the differential and you can't get a prybar behind it. I've had to get creative in a few cases.

I use the OTC pulling fork that goes on a slide hammer. I also use the OTC extension that goes between the slide hammer and the pulling fork. Nevermind that oil sending unit socket that's propping up the pulling fork for taking the picture.
