D.B. & S. triangular rule

I am trying to figure the age of this D.B. & S. triangular rule. Based in the below data it would be prior to 1868. Is that correct ?

Very cool triangular rule, small bit of tarnish. Hard to get a good picture..

Anyway, any idea of the date this would have been manufactured ??


In 1866 the company merged with a competitor, forming a partnership under the name Darling, Brown & Sharpe that lasted until Darling's interest was bought out in 1892. Brown & Sharpe proper was incorporated in 1868, with Brown's wife and daughter remaining as stockholders following his death.

DAT disagrees slightly. "Darling's reluctance to expand the company led the other two to form the Brown & Sharpe Mfg. Co. in 1868. The two operated in parallel until Darling's interest was bought out in 1892. The name, however, continued to be used until 1897."

The "both in parallel" delays your latest date a bit.

Sharing the data I found on roseantiquetools.com provided by Brown and Sharpe.

The manufacture of Steel Rules and other tools of precision was begun by Joseph R. Brown in 1850. In 1852 a similar line of work was begun by Samuel Darling and, in 1866, the partnership of Darling, Brown & Sharpe was formed, the business being carried on under that name until the partnership was dissolved by the purchase of Mr. Darling's interest in 1892." (Brown & Sharpe small tools: Catalog no. 34, pg. 4).

So, either 1892 or 1897, close enough !

128, 123, splitting hairs at that point. I go by the older than me, older than dad, older than gramps as my bars, 60, almost 90, and almost 120.
