Its a honor to have you stopping by! My wife's birthday was Friday and she loved the craft storage rack, she took pictures of it and showed it off to everyone :)

Nice score on the school surplus. The shelf unit is very nice and am sure will make life easier.

shorty

Thanks for stopping by! I had a blast at the surplus auction, I wish I had time to work on all my new pieces, The craft storage unit was a huge hit. Life is good at the Bear House :)

BF, great to read that your wife was pleased with the storage rack. You should be proud of your work.

My wife has commercial quantities of craft stuff literally. Down the track you may have to consider your inspiration stolen.

Scored this beauty Saturday at the Michiana Antique Market & Springfest at the Michiana Event Center in Howe, IN. It was a packed house! The weather was nice so I think everyone in the tri-state area was there  But I walked out with this cool fire extinguisher in perfect shape, I can't wait to make a hanging bracket for it and get it up in DaBarn...

I just hope Don Long doesn't see it, He might try to steel it from me, you know how much that guy like polished brass :lol_hitti

Man! What a great bunch of new acquisitions. That Delta bandsaw is sweet and the lady in the frame is too.:)

I love the fire extinguisher. I have one in the shop that is in rough looking shape that I'm now inclined to dig out and see what I can do with it.:D

Can i ask why you never painted the walls?

Thanks for checking in, I think Don is a Raiders fan. I need to put a coat of wax on this thing before I hang it in DaBarn :) Don probably has three already :D

I have been busy this month, I need to stay away from those auctions and finish some of the stuff I already got, The band saw is pretty sweet, It may have to sit on the back burner for a while though :( Mrs Bear goes in for surgery this week, so I will be busy with her for now...

Thanks for checking in! I have yet to insulate the ceiling, It hasn't been that long since I finished the steel, I still have yet to get any good pictures of it, all my photos are over exposed due to the bright lighting? But I will try to get some of the ceiling posted soon. I might be different than most but I like the looks of the bare OSB, and I have a lot of items to hang up and I think no paint gives it a bit more of a rustic look :)

Ok BF I'm here.
I'm a Charger fan with 5 of those fire extinguishers (been gathering them for a while) but none that pretty.
So I have spent this afternoon catching up on this fantastic thread.
My last post was back on page 11 I think so I have been here a while

We have much in common you and I
I have an 80s blazer that sits at the river to put the boat in and out of the water or go out into the desert to rescue a broken dirt toy for one of the guests visiting.
Your walls are looking great with those signs, candy machines and oil cans fire box and sanitary despensers mounted. You know how I love those things even your tin cieling looks familiar. Consider your shelf mounts stolen for some of my BRASS items with polished pop off valves rather than gauges underneath and I had not thought of painting my welding table.
And one last thing. My wife is heavy into crafts with her own 1200 SQ craft room full and I mean full of product.
I will keep your wife in mind this week as I pray!!

I'm sure glad I found your thread again today it was a great read.
Keep it comin

Oh! I pray that she'll be okay.

Techie

Thank you for thinking about Mrs Bear, She has to go in for a hysterectomy and a bladder sling, I think its pretty routine surgery now days, but we both have our concerns about it. She does have two and a half weeks of vacation scheduled and I took this entire week off to be with her, hopefully we will be out of the hospital in less then two days...

Mrs. Bear will be in my prayers! Hang in there.

upndown

Thanks for your thoughts and prayers, Hopefully all goes well. I will probably have some extra time to spend on The Garage Journal this week

Thanks for stopping by! I like your idea on the shelf, I have five vintage brass gauges that I want to use for another shelf, but that's down the list a ways on things to get done  The wife loved the craft storage unit, but it may not be big enough already :D sounds like our wife's have a lot in common too...Man I would love to visit The Party Garage! I have never been to California! Your garage is now on my bucket list. Thanks for the prayers...I will keep you updated...Oh yeah A Chargers fan! My Bad. I always liked watching Philip Rivers play.

Its been a while since I posted any updates. I was busy with Mrs Bear having had a couple of surgeries last week, had to spend two days in the hospital, boy I could go stir crazy in there :eyecrazy: Good news is everything went great and all is well now, she just needs some time off at home for R & R :)

I did get a couple of little projects finished up this week! Even though I was taking care of my wonderful wife...If you remember back in February she had a Chicago Bears sign water jetted out for me for my birthday and I finally made a frame for it and got it hung in DaBarn...

02-XL.jpg

05-X4.jpg

First I cut a piece of 1/2" plywood and ripped some boards on the table saw to make a picture style frame for it.

06-X4.jpg

I glued and then brad nailed the frame boarder onto the plywood.

07-X4.jpg

Had to do a little test fit before I paint

08-X4.jpg

Painted the frame with official Chicago Bears colors from Glidden that Home Depot mixed up, the powder coat orange on the sign is not a match to the official orange but it won't be that noticeable hanging twelve feet up :D

09-X4.jpg

Got the sign mounted onto the frame with four large headed screws, these won't be visible once I get it hung up in DaBarn...

10-X4.jpg

Got my birthday present hung up along with a Kendall sign that I have owned for a few years now that I had stored in the other garage, It feels good to get something off my list :)

I was working on a project in DaBarn and I had a bunch of these little 45 degree angle scrap pieces left over, so I picked them up and sat them on the bench where they stayed for a while, One day the wife came out and said you need to make something with those little pieces! I took that on as a challenge, And since she brought it up I thought I would make something for her with them, One of her favorite things is the show "The Walking Dead", So the wheels started to turn and smoke  It started out as something funny or kind of a joke but as usual I got carried away with it and this is what I came up with. My wife now has her own Walking Dead weapon for the zombie apocalypse...

Geez, I don't know where you find all these great vintage items in such great condition, or slightly used... well done!

On a side note, with all the Chicago Bears sports liturature, if we were neighbors, we could throw some really wild Packers vs Bears football partys. My entire workout room in my basement rec-room looks like Lambeau Field locker room, and some overflow into the garage, and adding.

Sign turned out great! Glad to hear Mrs Bear is doing well. My son and SIL coach three of my grandkids, got a double header today. Guess the name of their team...Da Bears. :lol_hitti

Thanks for thinking about Mrs Bear she went threw a couple of surgeries, but she is doing fine now, She just needs to take it easy for a couple more weeks but she is wanting to over due it! I was really happy with the Bears sign she had made for my birthday, It didn't look that good just hanging up against the OSB wall so I was happy with the frame and how it came out...

That zombie stick made me smile. Well done!

Techie1961

Yeah the Zombie stick turned into a bigger project then I thought! At first I just wanted to do something fun, but I got carried away with it and everyone thought it was really cool and I sure enjoyed working on it. Fun stuff in DaBarn :)

Wow! thanks for stopping by, good to hear from you! I haven't been over to your thread for a while either, just not enough hours in the day! With the wife having some issue's and I had to help my son Cody move into a new house and me moving my daughter back home after she just finished here freshman year at collage, and its been raining like crazy here in northeast Indiana making it difficult to keep up with the grass growing out of control! but hey its nice and green...Its fun to just sit down and get caught up with things on The Garage Journal...I have a neighbor and friend and old school mate that is a big Green Bay fan so its a lot of fun around here during Football season, I'm sure you would have a great time in DaBarn watching the Bears/Packers games with us

I managed to slip away for a few hours last weekend to a local auction, It was an estate of a old man that passed away, I think this guy went to every auction in the tri-state area in the last 50 years, He had a ton of junk! I saw this grinder in the sale bill and just knew I had to have the stand that it was on, so I went to the sale and had the winning bid of $40.00, I almost did a dance...It turned out to be so heavy we loaded it with a forklift, I'm just guessing on the weight but I think it weights between 500 lbs. and 550 lbs. I think the stand alone is 200 lbs. - 225 lbs...Luckily my dad wanted the grinder he thinks he knows a guy that will buy it from him? I just wanted the stand, I want to blast and paint it, then repurpose it as a stand for something else, I don't know what that is yet? WOW! this thing is from the early 20's I think and its made of a 1/2" thick cast iron and I thought it just has a really high cool factor about it :)

That definitely has a cool factor to it! If your weight estimates are close and it is between 28-34" tall you could make up to a 48" round table top that if my calculations in my head are correct could withstand the average person leaning on it to get up without tipping. It would be a great looking industrial style table base with a distressed top with a faux rivet metal edge band.... Sorry that's the furniture maker in me coming out....lol...

Of course the ultimate would be a display pedestal for the ultimate "da Bears" collectible that you now need to go and buy to display on the base! It's a win-win!

Holy ****! Thanks Duker for the idea, I haven't thought of that one yet and I absolutely love it! So I had to rush out and measure the stand, boy you nailed the dimensions almost to a tee...The height is 34 1/2"...The top is 9" x 11" and the base is 18" x 18" I'm excited now...Our dinning room is fairly small, the table we have in there now has a round top of 42" and that is plenty big enough, so I think the stand would be fine with a 40" to 48" top...Now for the million dollar question what would you do for the top? What wood and distress look or technique would you use and what finish?

Oh man what a killer idea Duker :thumbup:

As for the type of wood, what color range do you like...dark Browns I.e. walnut, stained oak or reds like cherry or mahogany or light shades like maple, ash etc.

Here are a couple of shots of a distressed dolly I had to build for a designer. The top was gone when it came to me and they wanted a vintage look. I used red and white oak and had to vinergarize the nails to leave the black marks etc. That is pretty distressed for a dining table top but it might give you some ideas on what you can do for character.

a85499783a6afb682b7f600f7282be21.jpg

You can make big fake rivets from carriage bolts that you oxidize. One way is to wire wheel the finish off and heat them until red then drop them in motor oil etc. (might want to keep that grinder now!)

I would check out Vintage Industrial out in Arizona, they have a website and make some very cool industrial furniture. It will give you some ideas as to how you can make your table top look retro.

Spent the morning going through your thread. You have a very nice barn and it fits right in to your lot with the house.

Seeing all the old signage, oil cans and such, you might want to change the name to DaMuseum.

Over time I have picked up some Indiana truck license plates, I have four of them that are consecutive years, 1958-1961 that I wanted to display but I didn't want to just hang them on the wall so I made a frame to display them. I like how it turned out!

01%20Custom_zps5ay6ayfa.jpg

Here is the frame all finished and ready for some stain...

02%20Custom_zpszrpbqmfc.jpg

Had to do a test fit of the plates...

03%20Custom_zpsiycdlkiy.jpg

I aged the wood a little with a ball peen hammer and a screw driver then gave it three coats of dark walnut stain, sanding the last coat to highlight some of the grain in the wood.

04%20Custom_zpshry9z8sa.jpg

After the stain dried I gave it three coats of polyurethane, I used 0000 steel wool in between coats to keep it smooth, If you look real close I think you can see the outline appearance of Jesus in the polyurethane

05%20Custom_zpsnwakub1b.jpg

I mounted the license plates onto the frame with some black headed screws, so they were not to noticeable...

07%20Custom_zpshtxlxbj3.jpg

Got the frame mounted on the wall, overall I like how it turned out. I really like the old Indiana truck plates :)

After $12.50 cents and some elbow grease here's what I ended up with. A Brown & Sharpe NO. 1 Machinist vise, Its 8" long 4" wide and 2 1/2" Tall. It operates as smooth as if it was brand new. It has one hole in it where some one drilled into it :( I thought about welding it up and grinding it down, but I can live with it :)

Greetings , I just discovered your thread. If your ever inclined to sell that machinist's vise I'll double your money for it ;)

Thanks for the great idea on the table! I'm pretty sure that is what I'm going to do with the stand, I want to go with a darker wood and stain and I'm really into putting a metal band with rivets around the outside. Right now I'm not sure when I will start this project though? I love the cart that you finished...

BEARS: thanks for the KUDOS and not everybody wants to BEE their OWN HARDWARE STORE like I do, but it's a goal or a dream.

as soon as I get my technical difficulties figured out with Dell, Microsoft and Verizon i'll post up some cool pictures of some of my Stuff and storage ideas so stay tuned and stop in often to the ORGANIZING 101 thread because you know I tend to post a bit.

cheers and keep up the great work

Just looked through this for the first time. Awesome building!! I love all the old signs and antiques. Just have a couple questions for you, how far apart are the main poles of the building? And how far apart did you space your trusses? Thanks! My dad had a 30x40 built years ago at his place and it filled up quick lol

Thanks for checking in I always like to see you here! I love the stand that I picked up and I love Dukers idea of making it a table, I will try to get to that project when time allows :willy_nil

Greetings , I just discovered your thread. If your ever inclined to sell that machinist's vise I'll double your money for it ;)

Mike

Thanks for dropping by! Yeah I stole that vise and it cleaned up really well, Some day I would like to have a small vertical mill and the vise should come in handy :)

Thanks for stopping by and the complements, on the 40' sides of the barn the posts are set on 8' centers, on the 30' front and rear the posts are set 7 1/2' on centers, except where the overhead door is. On the trusses I set them every 4' on center.
