Bears Fan, I just enjoyed going from post one to post 1,001, and loved it all. I really enjoyed the mix of big and small projects and the time you put in documenting the journey. Thank you!

BF, great looking desk, I can't wait to see it with the 1 1/2" walnut top on. Any plans to age or apply patina to the turnbuckles?

Thanks, I really wanted to do something different then anything at the office and I really like the vintage industrial look! I do need to get my office painted first but we have been super busy there!

Wow! Thanks for taking the time to go through my entire thread, I'm glad I made it interesting enough for you to make it all the way through

Thanks for the complement

I like it!

So......how much do you think that desk will weigh? :headscrat

Finallygotit

When I ordered the I-beam I paid for it by the weight, it was listed as 7.7 lbs. per foot so the four I-beam legs weigh approximately 66 1/2 lbs, I'm also interested in the total weight when finished? I will try to get a final weight on it when its completed and post it.

I already stopped by the local lumber company and picked out some walnut boards that look a bit rough with knots and imperfections so not to look perfect but rather aged, its funny you mentioned the turnbuckles I was thinking that was the one thing I wouldn't have to touch  I kinda liked the hot dipped galvanized finish

BF that is one real nice desk.

Thanks for the visit! its always nice to see you checking in and thanks for the complement on the desk

SO how much paperwork do you plan on having on that desk at one time?
It looks like it can hold the entire tree.

I like the design Nice

Don

Hey sometimes there is a lot of **** rolling across my desk! I just wanted to make sure it could take the strain :lol_hitti

Scrolling back through your thread to find one of your projects, I ran across the pic of the wireless internet equipment on top of a grain silo. Didn't register at the time, probably too late at night, but my cousin owns a wireless isp in western NE. It's a busy growing field, for sure!

From the looks of those pictures I'm happy to be where I am this winter UH

I had Ice on my windshield yesterday but my wipers took care of it lol.

Don

We sure are having a rough winter this year! A lot of really cold temperatures, blowing winds with snow and ice! I can tell you it really slows down the time I spend in the barn :wtf:

Working for a ISP for the last fourteen years has been a great career move, we are always busy! We have been doing more and more fiber build outs, that is the future of keeping up with the demand for more and more bandwidth

I have put the whole office desk project on hold for now, for reasons I don't want to discuss! now i'm thinking of repurposing it into a layout table for some of my future sign projects that I want to start on someday? for now its just on hold :headscrat

On a good note! I bought myself a birthday present in February :pimpflash
I was like a kid opening up a Christmas present on Christmas morning xmas I did get started on making a stand for it with casters to give me the ability to move it around DaBarn, this thing is a beast! it is a 3-IN-1 sheet metal machine made by Baileigh, it is the largest 3-in-1 combination machine on the market! it will shear, bend and roll a piece of 16 gauge steel 52" wide, you can cut up 4' x 8' sheets on it  It weighs in at a hefty 1200# :eyecrazy:

I started out by tearing apart a set of very old casters that I picked up from a garage sale years ago that I have been saving for a special project, man I love how things were built back in the early years of the industrial revolution  These casters are 9" tall and should have no issues with 1200#
I was surprised at how good of condition they are in after I tore them a part, they were well greased!

I'm not sure if I have ever seen a roller bearing quite like this? and they are in near new condition

I picked up and cut all the steel for the stand, I'm using 2x2x3/16 square stock for this project. I was practicing and trying out some different welding techniques and welding helmet settings to try and improve my welds :headscrat

Spent some time in the barn today to finish up all the welding on the stand and I assembled the casters to size everything up! I will need to rip down some plywood for the bottom shelf and a piece for the top of the stand, then I think I will have the stand powder coated.

Stand looks great, nice job on the welds.
I'd probably just use the triple ply-plywood base it's sitting on, if you could remove it from the rest of the pallet (and it fit the base you built.) It got it here from China in one piece, should be plenty strong enough...
YMMV

Thanks for checking in! I'm excited on the new addition of the 3-IN-1 to the barn, I need to pick up a sheet of plywood to finish out the stand, I don't want to use the Chinese plywood that came with the shipping crate! it is full of staples and glue, then I can get it out to powder coat, I do need to add some gussets that I bought for the stand also, just to dress it up a bit :pimpflash

gussets-X2.jpg

I want to start out by making some signs with the new 3-IN-1! I had this photo of a old Flying A sign that I really liked, I have never seen another one like it except for this one picture? it was neon but I will probably leave the neon off because of the price. I had already taken the time to make a pattern out of some heavy construction board, I had no dimensions to go off of so I just winged it, I think I scaled it a little large! But I always get carried away

When I get my stand done I promised my daughter I would make her a stand/table! so I will not get started on the sign right away

BF, if you raised your daughter the right way she would know that a flying A service sign is more important than a table/stand and would be willing to wait until after the sign is complete. Just kidding. :lol_hitti. Seriously though, that sign is the kind of project I'm looking forward to watching. Your mock up looks like you nailed the proportions just right. :pimpflash

Nice job on that mock up BF
Will you put the circle behind it? if you make 2 of them I could find room in the big party garage for one of them. hint hint

Nice piece of equipment and will come in handy. I could have used the shear and brake today. Every time I see a 3D sign or letters, I take pictures for reference. One day I’d like to give it a try. If you stored that Blazer in Florida, you’d have room for a nice layout table. Just saying. lol

Nothing ever seems to get done to fast around here, this winter has really been a pain in the ***! Hopefully I can start spending more time out in the barn and whip out some of these projects and get the 3-IN-1 up and going too

Thanks for the visit! I want to make the sign three dimensional just like the one in the photo, the picture I had lying on the floor when making the template was just to get some perspective on the wings. Sometimes when your making something its as easy to make two as it is to make one (hint, hint) :)

I wish the Blazer was in Florida! that would mean I was there too  we had a really rough, long winter here in northern Indiana! As I get older I keep thinking it would be nice to live a little further south? And you would be able to stop over and use my 3-IN-1

Bears Fan sweet.

Luv the attention to detail:thumbup:

Great to hear from you! Hope your feeling good today! Thanks for the complement, I think that is why it takes me so long to finish a project because I spend more time thinking about it then the actual time working on it, It does keep my mind busy when I'm working on something and I was raised by my dad to never do anything half *** :lol_hitti

I did get in some QST (quality shed time) yesterday! I almost have the 3-IN-1 stand ready for some paint, now I need to sandblast the casters.

My wife is a huge fan of the TV show The Walking Dead and I made her a Walking Dead weapon a while back, well I'm making her friend one now for her birthday which is February 4th, so I need to get it finished before I can get going on the desk!

All that is left is to get some primer and paint on this thing and they will be ready for the "Zombie apocalypse" :wtf:  :pimpflash: :willy_nil

We use those exact same sickle sections on the platform head we use to harvest soybeans and wheat. I've made a couple "tools" that look similar to the zombie brain tickler you made for your Mrs and I use them to cut strings on large square bales of hay and straw.

That exact same 3in1 is on my wish list when the new shop gets built. I wish I had what it takes to redo all the vintage stuff you do. It all looks so sharp when you get through with it !!

I've had that same 3-in-1 for 5 or 6 years now. Its been good to me. I use the shear the most, but the press brake comes in handy from time to time.

HD FLHX

Good to hear that you have had good luck with the Baileigh SBR-5216, I'm excited to start working with it. I really don't have the room or the money for three separate machines and I did a lot of research before buying the Baileigh, I have the Baileigh throatless shear MPS-1 and I really like the quality of the Baileigh products, maybe someday I can add a Baileigh bead roller to DaBarn

I really enjoy following along with the 1935 Gas Station :pimpflash

Thanks for checking in! I'm still working on the stand for the 3-IN-1, nothing ever moves to fast around here  The weather is improving, things really slowed around here with the cold we had this winter :wtf:

Thanks for taking the time to check in! I can't wait to get the 3-IN-1 on the new stand and actually have it available to make something, With the weather changing I will be able to spend more time outside

I dropped the 3-IN-1 frame off at the powder coaters last week to have it painted black :)

We had some great weather Saturday so I got the sandblaster out, I started off by polishing the face of the casters and then I sandblasted the inside of the hubs. I sprayed them with some self etching primer and painted the casters red.

BF, wow those cleaned up real nice. I'll bet they will look great with the black stand. :pimpflash

Jay

BF: great work as per usual. Did you take apart and grease the spinning style casters or just remove all the crud and rust?

Jayman17, Vieux , Drives

I was so excited with how these casters turned out for being nearly 100 years old? I cleaned the casters and gave them a good coating of Lucas heavy duty grease, the casters looked like they were in new condition.

BF, the sturdy as hell stand, the better than new casters, the spiderweb gussets and the cool color combination all add up to a job well done!

Hey BF, do you know offhand approximately how many scfm are required for those sandblasters like you own? I'm curious if my compressor can operate one of those. :headscrat Seems like it would make cleaning up/restoring things a lot easier.

Thanks for following along and the compliments! I'm ready to get that 3-IN-1 up on the stand, I think I will get my neighbor to lift it up with his John Deere tractor and bucket, I did get a piece of MDF cut for the bottom shelf, I also cut a piece for the top but decided not to use it, I thought it covered up to much of the stand

+1

Maybe a poll, BF?

Pugetdude

Great idea! I'm pretty sure I want them red and I would like to add some vintage hot rod pinstriping to it but all I lack is the artistic talent and a steady hand :dunno:

I'm not sure of the exact specs? I run my Quincy 2 stage compressor at about 80 psi and it has no issues keeping up! I used to have a single stage Coleman air compressor and I nearly fried it when using it with the sandblaster, sandblasting does use a large volume of air.

Great work B.F.
Makes me want to come over to play

Don

Good thing we don't live any closer together or our wife's would not be happy with us spending all of our time together in the "Big Party Garage" or the "Little Party Garage":lol::lol:

my only question is, why is it not navy blue and orange?

Thirdyfivepickup

That one made my laugh! I guess I never thought of it? Good idea though
