I got side tracked this week with a little project! I was over to a co-workers house and I spotted these two Aprili motorcycle brake rotors in his scrape pile, he said that they were sitting there for a year now and told me to take them, a light bulb went off in my head...that doesn't happen too often

I took them home and sanded the **** out of the disc's to get the brake pad marks out, then I cut a piece of 16 gauge steel for the center and ordered a clock movement from Amazon, then I put three coats of Colbalt Blue Metallic paint and three coats of clear on it, I was real excited on how it turned out  Now I want to do the other one in a different color :headscrat

BF,
How do you like the Bailegh throatless shear? Might have to consider one.
Been looking for a Beverly #1 for a while, couldn't find one in the Seattle area.
Maybe one will turn up now that I've moved to AZ...

Nice looking barn you have built yourself. I myself am from northern Indiana over in Warsaw. Will be getting started on my own garage here this summer. May I ask who you went thru for your trusses? Was it Pro Build out of Fort Wayne as well? Just doing some shopping around right now.

Thanks! Now that the clock is finished, I can get back to the other four projects I have started

Now that you have moved you might have to change your Garage Journal name :pimpflash

I really like my Baileigh shear! it works awesome for cutting curves and doing little projects. I really need to get this thing mounted somewhere permanent instead of putting it in my vise :headscrat

Pretty creative project. Sure came out nice. The color is killer
I have a cutter like yours that I've never used yet.

Don

Thanks for the comment on the clock! I really like my Baileigh shear and the quality of the Baileigh products, it really comes in handy on cutting curves and odd shapes.

Thanks for checking out my Little Party Barn and the comment on the clock! Now I need to finish the second one and maybe pick out a different color?

Nice job on the clock!

Jeff Ivers

Thanks for taking the time to check out the barn and the compliment on the clock! I try to get some motivation from The Garage Journal :pimpflash

That bulb was shining bright. Great idea for a clock and the color is cool.

Thanks for the comment on the clock! My bulb doesn't always burn that bright? But once in a while I get a electrical surge :lol_hitti

Thanks for the compliment on the barn, all though its not perfect, I can say I built the whole thing myself! I did get the trusses and the rest of the lumber through Pro Build in Fort Wayne, they where good to work with and all the material was pretty good quality, I didn't have to return anything! and they delivered for free! I bought the steel through a Amish supplier in Topeka that is now closed down.

I got a promotion at work so I have been super busy with my day job! I have not had a lot of (QST) quality shed time! I did get my Baileigh 3-IN-1 mounted on its stand with some help from a good neighbor and his John Deere tractor and front loader, I haven't even taken the time to clean off the shipping grease that is all over this thing :wtf:

41-X3.jpg

40-X3.jpg

I needed a way to cut some shapes in thicker steel but I didn't want to invest in a full blown bandsaw for the barn! So I opted out for a smaller *********** portable bandsaw from Milwaukee and a stand for it made by SWAG off road products, I really like the quality of this setup and it works awesome for what I need it for. The stand arrived in great shape and is heavy duty, all I had to do was wipe it down with some thinner and hit it with some 80 grit and a DA, I gave it a coat of self etching primer then I painted it to match the Milwaukee saw.

It will be nice once I get it mounted in a permanent location?

I did start on a book case that my daughter was asking for! all she gave me was the dimensions that she wanted 42" high 16" deep and 36" wide. Being how I like the vintage industrial look I took creative reign and made it out of steel and wood. I used 1 1/2" and 3/4" angle for the frame and I cut some 3/4" sanded plywood for the shelves, I used some 1/8" flat stock to add some decorative pieces to the front, I added some 3/4" flat stock around the top shelf and used some 1/2" square stock with some 1/4" round for a decorative rail around the top, all that is left is to get a finish on it now :)

I definitely like the watch you made. That's awesome!

Thanks! I really liked the clock too! I still have another caliper for a different project someday :pimpflash

Bears Fan congratulations on the promotion and the 3 in 1 that is just an awesome piece of equipment.:thumbup::thumbup:

1/2 Cup

Thanks! now I just have to find some time to use my new Baileigh 3-IN-1, I have a couple of projects in my head, but short on time :headscrat

That shelf is a work of art!

Jeff

Thanks! She wanted a simple bookshelf made for her room and as usual I got a little carried away with it! But hopefully I made her a heirloom to keep for a lifetime :)

Congratulations on the promotion!

^^^ second that! Also, the 3 N 1 on the stand looks great!

Thanks for the congratulations on the new job, I will be our new salesman and project manager, all new territory for me but I'm excited. I just don't know if I can get used to wearing dress cloths :wtf:

Finished up the bookshelf for my daughter this weekend! She loved it or at least she was just being nice to me  I painted the frame flat black and stained the wood with three coats of dark walnut and I used some flat spray urethane to top it off! I tried to make it match a restored vintage trunk she has

Congratulations and condolences on the promotion. Many of mine brought a small increase in pay along with a large increase in responsibilities. Eventually you get used to the longer hours.

The shelf unit looks fantastic!

So more money and less work That's a good promotion!!
Your artistic talent is boiling over the top.
A couple of real nice projects that I'm sure you should be very proud of.

How far are you from the Indy race track?
I just signed up for Indy tickets next year for the race. Might find time to drop in on ya next year :beer:

I have been busy and a little behind on keeping up on The Garage Journal, the new job is keeping me busy, along with trying to keep up on the lawn with all this rain we have been getting, I have not been idle in the barn though, thanks for all the compliments on the projects and congratulations on the new job, things are going good here for me.

Don, I live about a 160 miles north of the race track, roughly 2 1/2 hours, you are always welcome and I would be honored to have you visit, but it is a bit out of the way!

I have to give a shout out to 1/2 cup, I always got excited and enjoyed reading his comments when he visited my thread.

RIP my Garage Journal friend

A little background on this next project that I have started in DaBarn, We have a scrap iron yard not far from the house, so I always see loads of scarp steel running down my road by scrappers looking to make a buck or two. One day not far from the house I found this piece of scrap steel laying in the road, so I stopped to pick it up, so no one would hit it, I threw it in the back of my truck assuming it fell off a truckload of scrap headed to the scrap yard. When I got home and looking at it I thought what a great base or start for a sign, well I had ran the idea by my son Cody and he said it would make a great Cody's Pizza sign for his pizzeria he owns, damn I was hoping to hang in in DaBarn

01-X3.jpg

02-X3.jpg

He is the piece as I found it lying in the road.

03-X3.jpg

I leveled it the best I could and marked the back to cut it off so it was even.

04-X3.jpg

After getting it level, as it was bent a little out of square, I welded some one inch square tube on the back side.

05-X3.jpg

Here is frame all welded up and ground down.

06-X3.jpg

07-X3.jpg

08-X3.jpg

I got to use my new Baileigh 3-IN-1 to cut some 16 gauge sheet steel and I got it tacked welded onto the frame.

09-X3.jpg

10-X3.jpg

I cut a piece of 16 gauge steel for the bottom and two little pieces for the sides and got it all tacked up, I also added two pieces of 3/4" flat stock to give the face of the sign some different features, I thought it was too flat.

11-X3.jpg

12-X3.jpg

Cody had picked up this set of lights from his grandpa's estate after he had passed away, I thought it would be cool to incorporate them into the sign and I think it may have some sentimental meaning to him too.

14-X3.jpg

13-X3.jpg

15-X3.jpg

I used some 1/2" black pipe for the light mounts and drilled through the front and welded the pipes into place.

16-X3.jpg

Instead of welding it all up and grinding it down, I just decided to use some body filler to smooth out the seams.

This gets me up to date on whats been going on in the barn, I also have another project going on outside too, I decided to build my wife a porch so I ripped off my old deck out front, I will post some pics of that project soon

Love da barn. Does anyone know where to get a QST sticker ? I’m new to the forum but would like to honor 1/2 cup in my shop. Suppose I could always print the logo.

Thanks Bob- I found it. Thinking of the Church family at this time [emoji1374]

BearsFan - As a huge Dallas Cowboys fan here I’m looking forward to our matchup this year. I bet there’s nothing like a game at Soldier field, but enjoying a game in Da Barn with a frosty beverage has got to be the best! Keep up the great work. I just joined the forum and read your entire thread while I was on vacation last week and immensely enjoyed it. You’re extremely talented even for a Bears fan! Haha jk

Thanks for the comment on the sign! I haven't taking much time to work on it lately, been busy with the new job responsibilities and I started a big project on the house, building a new porch for the Mrs :pimpflash

Nice job on the sign, BF!
Can't wait to see the graphics.
Are you going to do a vinyl mask like Don Long's latest sign project?

PugetDude

Good to see you checking in! I will paint it black, then probably have a vinyl stencil made at the local sign shop and paint the graphics on, It would look like **** if I tried to hand paint anything

Great piece of work on the sign. What will it say?

Sorry you live so far away from the track.

Don

Love following along with you and Eric on the Mustang, I can't believe how much progress you made in one week! I think you need some (QRT) Quality River Time

Never felt a earthquake here in northern Indiana, sounds scary! I'm glad the Big Party Garage made it through unharmed

The sign will read Cody's Pizza, with colors to match his menu, someday when I get it finished :headscrat

It is pretty awesome watching a Bears game at Soldier Field, you can just feel the history there when your at a game, so long as its not in late December or early January, because you can freeze your nads off :shocking:

But there is nothing like sitting in Dabarn quietly with a cold beverage and watching a Bears game on TV

I think Don would of put on more of a mirror finish on those lights, I
didn't want them to be too shinny, I did shoot them with a coat of clear.

I did get some picks of the porch for you

That's a **** load of work there Buddy

They look great.

I just got my season tickets to the Charger games

Don

Thanks for the visit! I'm glad to see that you got your Charger tickets

I got a good start on the new porch for the Mrs, the old deck was 20 years old and in bad shape, it wasn't built very well and it was time to go! The wife asked for a porch.....so I said okay :lol_hitti

Got the destruction done! This was one 2 x 4 used as part of the railing, it only had 5 nails in it :wtf: this deck was constructed with galvanized twist nails, what a pain in the ***! I couldn't pull any of them so it was a big tug of war getting this thing apart...

01-X4.jpg

03-X4.jpg

Here is one of the supporting joists, it only had one nail in it :headscrat

04-X4.jpg

Another shot of one of the joists :wtf:

02-X4.jpg

Getting close to the end of the destruction

06-X4.jpg

Finally done! Got a clean slate to start the new porch

07-X4.jpg

We got hammered with rain and heat this week! This is what my back yard looked like twice in the past week :wtf: It slowed progress down some.

08-X4.jpg

I did get the ledger boards on the top and bottom and the joist hangers on, it was to muddy to dig any holes for the posts though...

If you want me to put it back like it was, you will have to send me a whole keg of those twisted pita's

I spent Saturday hand digging the five holes needed for the porch, it about killed me! 90 degree heat with 80% humidity :wtf: The holes are roughly 12" in diameter and 4' deep in solid clay!

10-X4.jpg

Now I need Shorty to drive up here and help me set these 5, 6"x6"x14' treated posts, but not today! I'm taking Sunday off

There are no opens paces like that around here. and everything is turning brown.

My body aches just thinking of playing with that digger
Good luck on the new porch.
