Bears Fan, that is definitely a full day's work. You realize it was way hotter than 90-degrees when you were doing that. Those readings are taken in the shade and it doesn't look like you had any shade. I've been doing a little shallow (2-foot deep) post hole digging in sand and set up a beach umbrella to give a little shade. It's 90*F in the shade but the ground temperature in the sun was 131*F. The little circle of shade makes a huge difference -- I haven't fainted once.

Man you live in the green belt and no fences around you. Very nice!!
There are no opens paces like that around here. and everything is turning brown.

It is nice and green around here, we have had some near record rains in my area, well since early spring! It has been a pain to keep up on the mowing twice a week, but I do enjoy a good looking lawn. The local farmers struggled to get all their crops in on time because of it.

Its Monday morning and my back is still hurting from those post hole diggers But its a big hurdle out of the way

I wish I only had to go 2' deep, but around here you have to go 4' to get past the frost line and it is code too, funny thing as I'm digging through the clay, I hit good dirt about 4' down

The heat didn't make it any easier, and the porch faces south right into the sun all day!



I'm still waiting on shorty to show up from Florida to help me set those poles, and maybe he will take the K5 back home with him, bring some cash shorty

I made quite a bit of progress on the new porch this weekend! Even though it was 96 degrees and 106 on the heat index, there was a good little breeze blowing though.

I wanted shorty to come up and help me, but all he did was send me some of that July Florida weather

I can't remember the last time I sweat this much, but I was excited to get this far on it and the worst of it past me

Now I have to decide what deck boards I want to use? have you seen what the cost of good vinyl decking is

Well I need to take the week off from working on the porch to rest my back

Nice progress on the porch! We have added a porch to almost every home we bought. My wife loves to sit out there with her friends and glass of wine and over time it became “Port on the Porch” for us guys... I will have to send a little something special your way to christen the new addition!

I had a really productive Saturday working on the porch, the temperatures were in the mid 70's and we had a nice breeze all day, so I got about 9 or 10 hours in on the porch, it has been slow going with all the heat we have had and the porch faces dew south in the direct sun, that and I have been dealing with some spinal issues. I was excited with the progress yesterday and I made the wife happy! So it was a win, win

They are made by Simpson Strong-Tie, sold at Home Depot, they are really nice pieces, heavy gauge steel and powder coated. A bit pricey! But well worth it

We have finally had some cooler evenings here! so we got to enjoy some QPT! Be careful if you guys come around here though, my wife's killer Shitzu lap dog is a "trained eater and sleeper" it may not turn out to good for you

if that faces south you might have to figure out some sort of drop down shade like we put on our windows that face west on our home cause looks like that new deck will get plenty of use.

I'm planning on using that type of black brackets in your picture of all of them that sits on the ground that will hold my 6x6 cedar fence posts and the ones you used on your porch framing look very nice.

are you planning on staining or painting and if you use stain which one are you using? we've had pretty good luck with Sikkens, but we haven't bought the stain for our new fence and deck yet and you seem to have a good idea on how to keep things nice so would like to hear what you're using.

Thanks for the visit and the kind words! I don't do much construction work, I'm just making it up as I go along, we have yet to pick out the stain, I don't have to get in a big hurry the wood was really wet, so it may not get stained till spring I will have to check out Sikkens.

I am pretty lucky as I have a bunch of good neighbors

Thanks for the comment on the porch! Good thing DaBarn is so well insulated! I would of had the entire neighborhood calling the cops as I watched the Bears game Sunday! It was exciting even though Tribisky can't get anything going, thank goodness for defense

I took some time away from the porch to do some car maintenance, first up was my daughters 2006 Impala, it was making a really loud screeching noise when turning the wheel, so I had to change out the power steering pump. While I was at it I changed the oil and oil filter and put in a new air filter too, it should now be good for most of the winter!

The oil in it looked and smelled burnt and it was foaming.

Up next was the wife's 2016 Terrain, I changed the oil and oil filter and added a new air filter while I was at it, it now has 54,000 miles on it and the tires were getting pretty worn, so I took it in Saturday morning and had a new set of Bridgestone Turanza's put on, these are 75,000 mile tires, so even though they are a bit expensive they may last as long as we have the car, it did ride really nice with the new Bridgestones

Then I started in on the wife's 1968 VW Beetle.

She informed me that the turn signals stopped working, so I tore the steering wheel off and found no broken parts, after removing the turn signal switch I found that it was just gummed up! I cleaned it with some electrical cleaner and a shot of oil, put it back together and it was working fine

Up next is a service job, I ordered a new oil screen and gasket kit with a new fuel filter, maybe I can get the oil changed this week?

We had a OH **** moment when we noticed a dent on the lower right front fender and we have no idea on how it got there? so I will try my hand at some paintless dent repair this week

I went to a wedding Saturday night for a good friend of my daughters, it was held at the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Museum in Auburn Indiana. It is a very special place with so many classics all in one building, even though I'm a muscle car kind of guy! it was an amazing site, It made me wonder what the people were doing on a Saturday night in the 20's and 30's that owned these cars?

I saw a similar jack the other day that a guy welded in an attempt to make a base for a coffee table and sorry I forgot to take a picture of it, but I was a bit sad seeing an old cool tool turned into a table.
