Thanks! I sure enjoyed working on those cans, I have several more lined up to work on but I have been really busy with the day job! I hope to be retired someday so I can spend more time in the barn

Got started on yet another project last weekend when I had a cut off wheel jump up and bit me











So what do you do when your out in the barn working and you don't have a first aid kit? well you cut a paint stick in half and wrap it with some masking tape...hey! it was a new paint stick

The wife got such a kick out of my first aid repair she had to take a picture of it and said this is Garage Journal material

Maybe I need to attend Shorty's safety training class?









I picked up this boiler expansion tank from a man redoing an old building in the town I work in, he had a stack of scrap metal and he was just going to take it to the scrap yard so I gave him a 10 spot for it! More to come

Nice job on the hand, Tony... looks like something I would do.
Did the disc bind in the cut?
On something that big I usually leave a couple of small tabs attached so the drop can't bind the cutoff disc- doesn't look like you got that far in this case.

You nailed it! that's exactly what happened, I had three sides cut when the one end dropped down a little bit and it kicked out the disc,
******* attack! the cut was going so smoothly I didn't want to stop

Its kinda like when you have a good bead weld going and you know your sleeve is on fire but you don't want to stop until your done

So Tony, you're telling me stir sticks and blue tape isn't a first aid kit? I bought a pack of short sticks (wide Popsicle sticks) and keep them in a sealed bag and make sure to pull off the first layer of tape so it's sterile, like the inside of a fresh newspaper. As long as I'm conscious, the box with the red cross on it remains closed -- my injury would be far more life-threatening if I used anything from Liane;s security box. Apparently a store-bought first aid kit is a decoration meant to impress visitors.

Seriously, that's a nasty cut that should probably be stitched, especially if you're right handed. Because I see a left hand glove on the ground I assume you not only cut your hand but also ruined a nice glove.

bad treatment of wound every real GJ member would have not used painters blue tape that is at least a DUCT Tape or electrical tape [think pressure to stop the red stuff from leaking]...... ask me how I know !!!!!

Thanks for all the comments on the cut, its almost healed and looks good, the paint sticks and blue taped done the trick, but no lacquer thinner was used


I did make some good headway on the expansion tank this week though



This is what the tank looked like when I first got it, the only rust hole in it was on the front where I planned on cutting that section off anyway.




Got the front cut off and nearly a finger in the process




I found about five pounds of calcium and rust build up inside.




I scraped and got the inside cleaned up, actually it didn't look too bad after a good cleaning




ACTION SHOT!!! I had to pull out the big guns to get those pipe plugs out after being in there for probably over a 100 years?




Then I sandblasted the inside to get it cleaned up, any guesses on where I'm going with this yet?

I used my CAD skills to designed some shelves




I made some shelf fronts out of 1/2" flat stock and some 3/16" rivets to dress up the shelves a bit.




The bottom of the tank is concave, so I cut a piece of 16 Gauge steel to make it flat




I started adding in the shelving, I had cut out four shelves, but only ended up using three because of spacing.




I have all the fab work completed, I have some grinding to do yet, then I want to paint the inside black and then wire wheel the outside to get it all shinny again, then clear coat the whole display case. I want to add some LED lighting underneath the shelves too.




I added some brass reducers on the top in the threaded pipe holes and an old brass gauge I had laying around. I want to add a brass fitting and some copper tubing in the other hole.




I'm real happy with how the display case is coming along

Shorty, I missed the free tape deadline Damn! I'm taking the class without the free tape





I guess I wasn't done with the display case yet, I picked up a site glass level gauge.




I drilled two holes in the side for the gauge.




I have to make sure I don't over fill my new display case.




With the gauge installed I can now monitor the pressure without worry, and not to build up too much pressure I added a pressure release drain on top



I ran some copper tubing down the side for the overflow.

I made two clamps for the copper line from the u-bracket in the back of the picture.







I should have a properly operating tank now

I really like how the display case turned out! now I need to get the inside painted

I went shopping at Harbor Freight and picked up a matching paper towel holder, paper towels and a rubber glove box holder, I don't think Walter was impressed

I have started several projects and I have them finished right up until it comes time to paint them, so I'm trying to get caught up



I made this Veedol sign and never painted it, so I started by masking off the rivet heads and then prepped it for primer.



Primed




I laid down three coats of black.




Then I wet sanded it with 2000 grit, now its waiting for some clear coat




I also filed and prepped the cast letters for some red paint

I made this wall mount sign out of some 16 gauge sheet steel and some rebar, but never painted it, you starting to see a pattern here yet




I mounted it to a couple of 2x4's to get it painted, after prepping it I gave it a coat of primer.




I wet sanded the primer with some 600 grit paper, then laid down some red for the stripes, after the red dried I wet sanded it with 2000 grit.




I laid out some pinstripes and sized up a couple of Shell decals that I had on hand, now its ready for some black paint, then I will cut the Shell letters on my Vinyl cutter, then it will be ready for some clear too.

I posted a while back that I got to pick anything I wanted from this old car wash before it was torn down, so I grabbed the $1.00 car wash sign from up top and I removed the two towel vending machines mounted to the wall, I had to use the angle grinder to cut the locks, well I finally got time to do something with one of them.













This was the stickiest decal I have ever removed in my life, it literally took over two hours to get this thing off and the glue cleaned up







I spent maybe another two hours on buffing, cleaning, removing scratches and years of dirt from this thing, I was surprised and happy with how well this one cleaned up, now its ready for some clear coat, I now have four projects waiting to be cleared, it suppose to be 71 degrees here Sunday, maybe I will spray tomorrow?

I love the vintage vending machines, but I thought this was too large for a candy machine, so I came up with cool idea on what I want to make this one! stay tuned for that

Drum roll please I have a license plate collection update on my all 50 state quest



My lovely wife scored me a Mississippi plate last week and I scored a Hawaii plate.



I want to hang them up in five rows of ten in alphabetical order, now that I have the first two rows completed, I went ahead and hung them up

New count is that I'm only eleven short of my life long dream of having one from all fifty states

I heard a story this week about a local guy near me that had collected one purple heart license plate from each of the fifty states, the collection is now on display in Hawaii
