So my dad is turning 50 this year. I'm going to go back home and surprise him at his surprise birthday party. I'd like to get him something he will actually use. He's into most typical man things (racing, hunting, grilling, riding his dual-sport, **** ladies) but he's a low maintenance guy and he's past the age where he tinkers too much on cars. He also has access to all kinds of new tools at work so hand tools are out. My initial thought was to get him a knife like the Kershaw Blur I just got but I think it might just sit around too much.

Any ideas what may be something he'd enjoy? What gifts you old farts of 50 years old would enjoy? :bounce:

funny, my dad turned 64 this year and he's just been starting to get more into recreational wrenching the last few years as a hobby, now that he's not as busy with work. i always enjoy digging into a project with him when i come to visit. i (still) always learn something new.

Save your money. Showing up is the best gift you could give him.

Without sounding like a douche.... I totally agree! driving home is going to be expensive haha but I do owe him one (or a few) and i'd like to get him something for that.

give him a hug, tell him thanks and walk away
my son did such a thing when he turned 18, then again when he got married, then again when he made me a grandpa.
I forget anything he ever purchased for me, but I remember his confident stride as he turned and walked away with a slight grin.
being a father is about raising your kids first and foremost, the best gift for any Dad is letting him know he done right.

Tools have got to be favourite! After all, you can never have too many!

Why not get something that's a 'notch above' what he's already got! Something pleasurable to use, so that he remembers the day whenever he uses the tools!

If he hasn't got one, a nice Snap On 3/8 drive socket set would always be acceptable, or failing that, a wrench set from the same source! See if you dealer has any 'specials'!

Alternatively, how about a top end screwdriver set, such as the wood handle Nepros drivers! Almost too good to use, but who wouldn't be delighted to get a set as a gift!

Just spend a few days at home take him out to dinner. And just hang out at home for a few days. If you dont live close by and dont see him much. Im sure he would enjoy that way more than any gift u give him. U can get him something small to open at the party like a leatherman or something of the sort.

Find a nice 50 year old vise, like a Wilton, Reed, or Parker. Clean it up and paint it his favorite color. He will love it.
