So I was cleaning out Dad's barn last week. They've got this crazy big hardware cabinet over there. The next door neighbor just gave it to them last year. He said he didn't want it. The story goes that his great uncle built it long ago. Looks to me like its about 100 years old...so that sounds right.

So it was just sitting there empty, covered in dust out in the middle of the barn...various items beginning to pile up as they do on any horizontal surface in a garage-type area. I thought "Maybe I should use it for something out here. Maybe use it for what it was designed for." I decided to clean it up and give it a coat of linseed oil.

I think this thing is beautiful. Mom said she wanted to use it as furniture...until she realized how big it was. Its over four feet tall to give som perspecitve...probably about 5.5 feet tall and about 3 feet deep. Its been taken care of...no broken wood, drawers are still sound...the even still have wax on the slides. I told them that I get first dibs if they every want to get rid of it!

Looks like something I would have seen in older Hardware Stores in the early to late 50's.

and someone has added the wheels..

If you needed to store lots of small or bulk parts - it would be very useful.

FWIW,

Looks like something out of a school.

You guys should see some of the old monster cabinets, with tons of different sized drawers.

Anyone remember the "Dewey Decimal System" in Libraries??? Beautiful cabinets with dozens of tiny drawers, all made out of antique oak, yet nobody can remember what thye were used for.....that make me old??? ;)

Yeah, I think the neighbor is foolish for letting something awesome like that go too. But, most people today just want the newest, biggest and baddest. Oh well...

In retrospect, I think it was the best $8 I've ever spent on that quart of boiled linseed oil. Man...I know nothing about wood finishes, but it sure did a lot for just one coat.

Very cool & very handy.

My dad has the one I always remember rummaging through at my great-grandfather's shop. As a kid I would spend all afternoon going through the cool stuff in those drawers. Ours is narrower and taller with 50 or 60 drawers, small ones up high and larger ones down low.

Nice find.
