Picked this up at the swap meet this past weekend mainly because I had no friggin' clue what it was - thought it'd be a good item to toss up on here and see what y'all think...

It's a 1/2" drive specialty socket, with three pieces of stamped steel hinged with a cotter pin and allowed to freely move roughly 30° in either direction. The center piece of steel is the only part that comes in contact with the pin, and it has a 'point' at the very center. The other two pieces are secured in place by two screws, and can be adjusted in or out, then tightened in place.

There are no markings or stampings that I can see, it is/was a chromed socket with a knurled pattern around it, and the drive square looks as if it was drilled out, and then the corners chiseled out afterward.

Anybody know what this is?

Adjustable pin spanner? Not really pins, but along the same concept. Not sure why it would have to pivot on the cotter key though.

Don't know, but it looks like it'd work a ****-ton better than the one I made for tightening the fore-end on Mossberg and Remington shotguns.

IDK about original application but I can see tons of uses for this. Nice little tool.

Not sure why I didn't remember, but this was included in may vintage socket sets because valve jobs were more common and some engines had slotted valves.

looks like it might be useful in getting the nut off the JH Williams S series ratchets possibly....

no idea what it would have been intended for though
