Daiken poor customer response

Hi All,
Just want to relate my recent experience with Daiken.
Two years ago, had a new whole house A/C, heat pump installed by Patricks Heating, and Air conditioning of Ocala, Fl. Cost $8000, install went fine, this was in July. Come December, heat wasn't working, called for service, tech finds multiple issues, company decides to replace entire compressor unit. Next summer, A/C fails, company replaces sensor, and control unit. This September A/C fails with error message " main control board fault". Tech comes out, sees error message , charges me $65, and says he will order controller. After two weeks, I talk to service manager, and he claims he can't get part due to Covid, I say B.S., and nothing has been done since. Daiken claims 12 year parts warranty on this unit, but apparently if they choose not to repair it they can just ignore you and nothing happens. I have filed complaints with Daiken, BBB, and FL state attorney general, and nada results. So bottom line, I am going to have to eat my $8000, and get another system installed, hopefully from a reputable company this time.

Daikin units aren't bad, but the company *****. They bought out McQuay about 15 years back and you still can't get info for any one of their machines. They just can't find it. My guess is Amana and Goodman will be next now that Daikin bought them out, too

I never could figure why Daikin decided to buy McQuay as a means of establishing a presence in the US. Daikin seemed to have a good reputation internationally, and was (is) the 2nd largest hvac manufacturer behind Carrier.

McQuay, OTOH, made really good air handlers back when that was their only product, but once they got into compressorized equipment they produced junk by the truckload.

There was one large contractor in this area who used a bunch of that stuff on both plan and spec and design/build jobs during the 80's because it was always cheaper than Carrier, Trane, or York. They eventually went bankrupt due to some major mismanagement problems and we picked up service work on several of the buildings they'd done. I never saw any problems with the quality of the installation work by the original contractor, but that equipment was something else.

We'd never used McQuay on any of our own jobs, but boy did we get an education in trying to keep that **** running for the service customers. Biggest problem being a lot of the equipment, and large air cooled condensing units in particular, would literally shake themselves apart over 3 to 5 years' time due to poor engineering and cutting corners in manufacturing. When finding service valve bodies on Copeland accessible hermetic compressors cracked due to vibration was almost as likely as finding dirty filters, you have a definite problem.

Why Daikin would have chosen to enter the US market by purchasing a company with the legacy of problems McQuay had remains a head scratcher for me to the present.

wish I'd bought Mitsubishi instead but what did I know 15 yrs ago...

Daikin are on almost every Japanese CNC machine as some sort of hydraulic pump or cooler. They are very well made in that sector. Its a shame that they are poorly represented and supported in the USA

I have a Daiken Natural Gas Furnace that is starting it's third heating season with no more than filter changes.
