Daikin Mini Split shutting off

I just installed a Daikin 19 Series 24000btu Mini Split earlier this year. I used the A/C all summer with no problems. I started using the Heater last weekend and have it set to stay at 62degrees. It does a great job maintaining temp in the shop, but for the second time this week, I have come home to find the unit shut off after running for 3 days. Could someone tell me what might be causing this issue? I looked through the manual but didn't find anything. Should I set the temp to a higher setting?

Maybe you had a power interruption. I have a MrCool 18k unit that to my chagrin does not come back on when the power is interrupted. I remedyed that by installing a wired thermostat that turns on an electric furnace if temps don’t hold. My 12k unit does come back on.

Was it actually turned off, as in you had to turn it back on? I have a pioneer and at around 32 deg outside temp, it will go into a defrost mode of the condenser and the inside unit will stop blowing. After maybe 10 min, it will start up again and put out heat.

The remote was still on showing the temp, but the inside unit's green light was off and flaps were shut. The building itself was down to 43degrees. So I know it was off all day.

It sounded like you had power interruption. But there is a way for the remote to pull error code from the unit. Maybe there is or isn’t one. Check the last few pages of the manual.

Well when I got home the unit was off again, so I ran a code check on the remote. It through no code and when I made it back on the 00 normal code it gave me the long beep. I also don't think we have had any power interruptions because no clocks have reset in the house. The manual says it should come back on automatically if there was a power failure. I turned the unit back on a couple of hours ago and it has the shop up from 43degrees to 72degrees.

The Daikin should have automatically returned to where it was after a power outage. The step that is recommended when having an issue is to shut the system down and turn off the circuit breaker cutting power to the unit for at least 10 seconds, rebooting the system. Seems to cure a lot of ills! They are more of a computer than a HVAC unit.

Good batteries in the remote?

Make sure no timer is set (send back the timer off command with the remote) and turn the breaker off for 30 minutes.

Try it again after that.

I Thought it is worth mentioning there is a 7 day thermostat programming on the remote of some of the daikins

If it is you may want to clear it all out.

Thanks guys for all the replies. Yesterday I turned the breaker off for 30minutes and back on. Everything was working great. I checked it before leaving for work this morning and it was down to 58degrees in the shop with no air blowing out of inside unit. I checked the outside unit and it sounded as if it was in defrost mode. I noticed ice in the drain pan and small icicles protruding from the drain holes underneath. I had the wife check it again about 10:00 and the building was up to 66degrees but the unit had shut off completely. This morning was 20degrees with a wind chill of 15. The unit does not have a wind baffle or drain pan heater. Could it be freezing up and shutting down?

It is supposed to work until 5F
Defrosting is normal.

Some ice may be normal. If your day time will go above 32, then it has time to melt the ice.
You just want to make sure the ice doesn’t build upwards and hit the fan.

Only thing I can suggest you can try is to set it 50F to decrease the load and run time and see if it shuts down. It sounds like it runs a little warmer than your setting anyway.

When you say shut off are you talking about indoor unit, outdoor fan, outdoor compressor, or all of the above?

When certain conditions are met my Gree system will also completely shut down and then it will come back on when temps drop (or rise) enough to meet the design criteria based on mode settings and temps.

It is in my service manual that I downloaded online. Go to daiken and check their service manuals for this info. The Grees show when each component will turn off/on based on design.

This info was not in the owner's manual that came with the systems.

I've tried everything mentioned above. I have been keeping a close eye on it. It worked great from Thursday morning to Saturday night with outside temps staying above freezing. Sunday morning we were down in the 20's and the unit shut off. This morning when I checked it at 5:30, the outside temp was in the 20's and it was on, but not blowing any air, and the temp in the garage was were I had it set at 66degrees. Had the wife check it 4hours later and the unit was off, vents closed and the temp had dropped to 55 degrees inside. It appears that when the outside temp drops below freezing it is shutting off.

If it's using the heads internal temperature sensor for control it could just be staying too warm up around the head to call for more heat. One of mine is like that so I have control it with the remotes "follow me" sensor to maintain a consistent room temperature.

Easy test to see whether it's really off or just not calling for heat is bump up the set point a few degrees and see if it starts heating the next time you catch it off with the room cold. It might defrost first before heating so be patient if you try this.

I have a Daikin 12k 15 seer and the vents never close until I turn the unit off. Following your post with interest as there is little online for troubleshooting mini's.

I should add that I am in Florida and never go into defrost mode.

from the manual it looks like whenever the system shuts down it is supposed to flag a code. When you found the system had shut off unexpectedly, you should try again to pull the code using the "long" method, as it says the short method doesn't necessary show all the code.

surprisingly it doesn't say anywhere it will shut off based on just ambient temperature alone.
