daisy chaining heavy wire

I would like to daisy chain my 220V welding circuit so that I can have outlets at multiple locations. Obviously you can't just run this heavy stuff in and out of a box and make the connection with wire nuts like with 12-2 Romex. How are you guys connecting the chain?

Split bolts or trade name kernies then tape up using 3m C130 rubber tape and a outter coat of 3m 33. Also there are a couple manufacturers that make multi tap blocks, Burndy is one of them.

What gauge wire is it? I have wire nuts for connecting 6gauge wire. Polaris connectors are more expensive than split bolts, but the hard insulation they come with makes them fit easier in a box than a golf ball of tape.

Technically he was making a negative reference to "not being like 12 gauge wire".

Polaris taps or use 10 gauge wire and a 30 amp breaker for a welder only circuit.

Also there's lots of posts on this. Not sure if anyone has followed up with what they ended up doing or not.

Old timers would cut back a section of the outer sheath and then trim about an inch of the insulation for each of the wires. The bared copper was bent into a loop and then wrapped around the appropriate screws.


EDIT : This will only work for up to 12 gauge !

Be aware that local/state code may not allow more than one outlet on high amperage circuits. As an example in Virginia you cannot have multiple outlets on circuits greater than 20 amps.

Good point; I live in suburban MD, and received the same response from my building inspector several years ago when I asked about putting two welding outlets on a single circuit.
