Hi y'all,

Just purchased a new house with a two car attached garage. I have plans for a lift down the road as I have OK height in the ceiling, like 10'2". It's better than the single car 7' ceiling I came from. Anyway, I want to use a lack shaft door opener as the space overhead is fairly valuable to me.

Come to find our the build used Wayne Dalton torque master springs rather than torsion bar. I could use iDrive, but some folks say it's crappy and not a good solution, besides the fact that it's discontinued. So I've been toying with the idea of converting to torsion bar. Anyone see an issue with it? Would it be worth it? Any advantages to the torque master? The door weighs about 390 lbs.

And of course my other thought here since I just dumped a **** load of cash to close this pig, what's a range this might/could cost? It's a simple side by side two car, 8ft tall sectional door and 20ft wide. Am I lookin at $500? $1500? few grand?

TIA,
Bill

Double check your measurements! I personally have never seen a 20'x8' door with the torque master system. I would definitely convert to torsion! Either way you gotta start with the correct size.

I checked the DDM website, they don't list one either. Good luck.

Yeah I'm sure you're right I've never put a tape on it, I was just a guesstimating.

Just for point of reference , I paid 1100 bucks for an r-17 16x7 CHI door installed with hi lift options. That was all new tracks, etc. I assume you can get yours converted for much less than that. Granted , I know prices and regions vary. Have you called a GD place to quote, or are you looking at strictly DIY?

Most will advise against DIY. One reason you might not think of is that a GD installer can get the materials for much less than you can. It's like insulation — pay to have it done.
