damaged Montezuma box, looking at Snap-On

I have bad luck with nice things. I have a previous generation Montezuma 72" which looks similar if not identical to the new Extreme 72" box. it's about an inch wider than the wall it's parked against. a month after I got it, my dad hit it with a log splitter due to it sticking out and put a 10" scratch on it. it led a relatively peaceful life in my garage until my Craftsman jack decided to not want to release under load and lower my 4.5 ton dually gently during a clutch install. instead it dropped the truck in a split second, it rolled off the 2x8s under the rear wheels and pushed the box right into the wall. the truck has a Ranch Hand style front bumper so it didn't hurt the truck any. the drawers all still open and the corner post is mildly deformed. impressive.

I have long wanted a different box, it's a tank and has held up well but I hate the drawer detents. you could pick the thing up and turn it 90 degrees on its side and the drawers wouldn't open, even after 5 years of opening and closing. the force it takes to yank the drawers open or slam them shut completely always scatters my neatly arranged tools everywhere. I initially liked the 30" depth but I'm only 5'9 and cant reach the back of the top drawers without standing beside them. I keep looking at boxes and keep going back to Snap-On Classics. the Classic 96 is too wide. I'd like to have a separate box for mechanics tools and woodworking tools/shop supplies so I am thinking a pair of 55" classic 78s, one in each part of my shop? how do the drawer detents work? I am paring down my tool collection and focusing only on quality over quantity and have a lot of wasted space in my 72" box. what are you guys paying off the truck? it would be worth the Snap-On guy's trip to my home shop I think.

The snapon boxes use lock and roll latches to hold them closed. The detects are there only to provide a cushion for slamming the drawer closed. I like the latches. The drawers open and close very easily.

The Lock 'n Roll isn't gonna shake your tools up - I guaranty you that.

Fyi, there are different detent hardnesses. You could replace them to something a little less grippy.

I have what I believe to be the same box sold under the Craftsman brand, and I hear you on the detents! I just bought mine used, and by used I mean professionally for years. The detents are still strong on all but two drawers.

Do you happen to have any pictures of your box? I was unaware Montezuma sold any with those style pulls.

I had the top made, not an OEM top. what do you think it's worth with the damage? $1500 too much to ask?

Damage? What damage? That's nothing. If I had the cash, I'd gladly buy it off of you. I have outgrown my MAC box. And yes, my MAC box has very stiff drawer detents. I hate them...

Give me 15 minutes with a dead blow mallet and some touch up paint and you'll never know it happened. I think you might need to build a roll cage for your snap-on box. Hell I put on on my HF box. If your that mean to a montezuma box I can only wince in horror at what you could do to a Snappy box.

A little wax and 10 minutes with a file will ease up the detents or make them go away if you don't like them.

I beat on it for a while, I could beat on it some more. the point is I never liked the box in the first place and this would be a good excuse to trade for something more practical.

The raise and release locking drawer pulls are brand new. The 72" product with that style handles are due into stock in a week or 2. As soon as they arrive we will have pictures.

I'd say $1500 is a good price. I paid $1200 for my box, and while it isn't damaged, the paint is pretty rough on it. Boxes this big are hard to come by, so they should hold their value pretty well.

I'm dumping money on a SO because I hate the drawer detents on the Montezuma and SO has integrated drawer organizers. the dent is just an excuse to finally get what I want.

What's your Snappy dealer going to give you on trade-in??

If it's next to nothing, why not sell that Damaged box to fellow GJ for a song?? I'd make the drive to PA to take that off your hands for $300 to $500. . . :D

Just a suggestion, I would knock out the high spots and make some corner guards for that damaged box to hide the damage before I sold it. If you were in England I would give you $1500 before I "fixed" it up and flipped it on eBay for £2000.

not sure, I'm not served by SO truck, I'll consider trying to get ahold of the local guy again and see about a trade. last time I tried to buy a tool cart from him it was backordered indefinitely and I gave up. I was going to look for the box on ebay or craigslist. there were a couple sweet classic 78s on ebay for cheap but they were too far away.

I'll def offer the box to local members but not for $500.

thanks for the tip, I wonder if the corner guards off an Extreme would fit.

I think 20-30% off of list price is do-able by any motivated dealer. Dealers tend to discount boxes much more then tools.

You can probably do better if the dealer has any repos or boxes from their dealer convention.

I was kidding of course. ;)

Good luck in finding the tool box you want and dealing with the damaged one.
