I can't tell you how many times I've done the same thing. Its best to just put in the amount you are willing to pay early in the evening if there is a chance you will fall asleep.

I set my alarm for an auction today, about 1.5min before it ended. It went higher than I wanted to spend, but I still know how you feel. I love those auctions that end at 2-3AM.

Sorry dude, but that is frickin' hilarious!!!

Honestly, I can picture myself doing that too, so I guess that's why I find it so humorous. Sorry you missed the auctions though.

It makes me cringe the way the guy sits them on top the drawer pull for the photo shoot ... ouch!

I would think a fresh coat of tool wax and red velvet back drop and very subtle back lighting would be much more appropriate.

How about some red velvet on top the drawer pull to prevent scratches and paint nicks? Or better yet, I should just email the seller and tell him to stop doing that. :D

ok......i'm going to agree with merkava here :eyecrazy: the list price on my mb1901 was 8k when i bought it, i just got 9k for it because i took extremely good care of it ( and you guy's laughed when i said i waxed it ). the drawer liners are even in good shape. to me it would be like buying a new pickup and using the hood for a workbench.

If setting a ratchet on the edge of the drawer screws up the paint, Strap-On needs to step up to better quality paint for $8k.

Haha, they would have you in a straight jacket within an hour of watching me work.:lol_hitti

Roger that! I wonder what his reaction would have been to to the dumping of my SO box by a ***** while I was at lunch.

I was pissed, but kept it under control.

at work there's always somebody saying to somebody else "hey, can I borrow your -----?" while they're working under a plane and don't want to get up. "sure" *zinngggg* across the floor it goes.

Yeah ... all it would take is for you to use a #2 Phillips screwdriver for a #3 Phillips screw head or visa versa, and they'd have to lock me up. :eyecrazy:

Okay... you got me. That particular thing drives me NUTS! Using the wrong size screwdriver means either A) you do not have the correct screwdriver or B) you are a lazy sack of pig ****.

Oh, you won't catch me doing that. I use the proper tools. You might catch me tossing it under the plane for my buddy to use when I'm done, though.:lol_hitti

Today, I was installing a projector in the ceiling of a computer lab. "They" neglected to buy a mount for it, so I had to fabricate one from various **** I have cluttering my office.

The only bolts I had that fit the mounting holes in the projector happened to be tamper-proof hex heads. The only wrench I had to fit them was too long to use due to a HVAC duct right above the mounting location.

So, I used slip-joint pliers to tighten them.

I don't think I would want to pay for a sniping program. I figure if I miss out, it was not meant to be. I think I remember missing an auction, then finding the same item cheaper at a later time.

One time I scratched my SO box, I called my dealer, and he came by with some touch-up paint to fix it.

Since this thread seems to be drifting a bit hither and yon, let me ask about sniping. My sister swears by it; I don't get it. If an item is currently at $1 early on, and I feel that it would represent a fair value to me for $25, why would I care when I stick the bid in? If I get it for that amount or less, great. If my $25 determination drives the final price to $25.01 from somebody else, I might wish I had bid $25.02, but then where does it stop? That's why I chose a place to stop in the first place.

You're looking at it wrong.

If you stick the $25 bid in with two days to go, even say it shows up as $5 to start....other people might see that and start bidding to get on top.

If you let it sit with no bids until the last few seconds, they have no chance of bidding you up when you throw your bid in.

I've seen the exact scenario many times watching items on ebay. I can be watching 2-3 of the same thing, but somebody else might only be watching one, and they put a bid in. Well, somebody else is only watching that one, so they bid on top of the other guy, so on, and so forth. That item will end up going for $65 when it started at $15. If nobody's bidding on one of the other auctions for the same item, I can throw my bid in at the end and pick it up for $15. That means the other guy just paid $50 more than he had to by being dumb and bidding with lots of time left.

This is a perfect example of what you're talking about. The auction will probably be up to $150 before the idiots quit throwing bids at it. It pisses me off.

Yep, or the ratchet that was posted that IN THE AUCTION said it was $112 new from Snap-On, and it sold for $140 PLUS shipping.

I sold two old Holley carburetors with corroded metering blocks, and both needed rebuild kits, which came to around $120 each for parts to fix. So, assuming NEW condition, they were only worth $80 each, in their shape, maybe $20 for parts, which I figured to get about $40 from the pair. Two idiots started having a "my ***** is bigger" battle to the death and I ended up selling the two crappy carbs for $180. :lol_hitti:lol:

...but doesn't that just mean the other guys are fools? I mean if it's only a good value to me up to $25, maybe to someone else it's $30, but surely never $65. And I mean stuff that's not particularly unusual or rare; if it was your favorite childhood toy then reason may no longer be involved.

But you guys are saying (if I'm getting this right) that my chances of getting an item for less is to wait to the last moment so that other watchers don't get a chance to top it. So I still don't go past my $25, just that my chance to get it for $15 or whatever is better.

Exactly. You're not giving anybody else time to think about re-bidding higher than what you did.

Say the auction starts at $5, and they put a $15 max on it. You do nothing...end of the auction comes, you throw a $25 max bid in, and the next thing they know, you won the auction for $17.50 with a second or two remaining.

Now, say they have a $15 max on the $5 starting bid, so it's showing $5. You throw in a $25 bid, and you have it for $17.50. They realize they're out, so they throw in a bid for $20, and you still bump them, so they go $22, and you still bump them. They quit. You're at $22 now. Then some other shmo comes along and throws a $35 bid in and it's at $27.50. You're out of the bidding. Some other guy comes along, sees the $27.50, and bids $30, and pushes the other guy up to $30, where he finally wins it.

See the point? It can be a vicious cycle. There's no point showing your cards early on.

I've never understood why people bid early so much; eBay is weird that respect and people do get into bidding wars! Paying over retail is bizarre; I think that many people like to buy on ebay and appreciate the novelty of purchasing on the site. Why they do this, rather then going to Snapon.com is beyond me (unless you can get it cheaper on ebay). I am a cheap skate, being a flea market/pawn shop addict but Snap-On tools seem to be hard to find good deal on eBay. Just like anything that is in demand on eBay; many times good deals are had by finding things that have been titled incorrectly or unclearly on the eBay ad and people don't find the item easily, through the normal searching methods. I tend to get better deals on Snap-On in flea markets/pawn shops; problem is many times I can't find many of the new ratchets and things I want. Sometimes I won't see anything at the flea market/pawn shops for months and then all of the sudden I'll hit the jack pot; I think this is why I am addicted to the "hunt" and the thrill of finding something new to buy cheap! :)
Oh, I have lost a auction falling asleep in front of the computer or just losing track of time; surfing on other sites.

I was looking for winches and saw one listed in housewares. I thought wtf? Sure enough, 8,000 pound winch listed there for a starting bid of $200. I waited, waited, waited, threw in a last minute bid of $200 and won it.

The seller emailed for my info and said "I can't understand why nobody else bid on it." "umm, you had it in housewares" "Oh god, I can't believe I did that.":p
