Daniel Woodhead Droplight Repair Question

Hello folks, today we have a little research project under way, and I thought this group of warriors may have some information to share.

We're trying to figure out how to rewire a vintage Danial Woodhead Protex model droplight, and we can't see any means of disassembling the body.

We are thinking it may be a pressed fit unit, but before we use any force to pry it apart, we thought we'd check. This is an old light, but it's still working and was probably a $50 or $60 light when it was new.

Couple of pictures are attached, I hope they come through, because the file size is hefty.

Appreciate any information you folks can share on this. The light was doing real fine up until Jethro clipped the cord in his Zero-Turn mower. It needed replacing anyway.

Thanks a bunch, Giovanni

Daniel Woodhead is some real expensive stuff, way over priced. Not sure why you would want a regular bulb type drop light in these days and times, but sorry, I have nothing to offer on how to disassemble the light.

I've got more than a few old DW drop lights, but nothing that old. A lot of the weatherproof items they made were just as you suspected, a press fit. Go slow and don't be afraid to use plenty of lubricant. It may be expensive stuff, but the fact that it's still around after all these years says something. Might want to try a little heat as well. It might make that rubber a bit more pliable.

You ever figure out how to disassemble? Mine seems to have a collar above where the cage attaches. It doesn't want to unscrew.

Just took apart the same Woodhead drop light to replace a dry rotted power cord. The guts are all one piece and come out through the top of the rubber handle. Cut the old cord off flush with the bottom of the handle. Then stick a flat blade screwdriver between the tan collar and the top of the rubber handle and work your way around prying gradually. It will start to come out of the handle and when it comes up about an inch, you should be able to pull the guts out. Mine was 45 years old and the rubber handle is not as flexible as it once was. The cord is a 16-3 type S1 cable.

This thread is from 2012, they either got it fixed or gave up.
