A little background:

2007 - I started my own small motorcycle road racing shop with a friend. We specialized in paint and bodywork and turned out some pretty cool race stuff in addition to occasional custom projects.

It was pretty cool and supported itself at least enough to allow me to pursue my racing program which was also pretty cool.

Last but not least, it also provided me with 2000 square feet of space in which to work and store my bikes and related projects.

Fast forward to 2010 - a combination of factors, most notably the failing economy, forced me to shutter the doors on the shop. Simply put when people are losing their homes they aren't painting their motorcycles. As disappointing as it was to abandon the venture, the lack of sleepless nights and heartburn was a welcome result. The other result was no place to put my stuff. My house is ~ 900 square feet with a 16x10 attached garage --- enough space to shove it all in but def not enough to work at all.

^^^^^
So that's what I did, shoved everything in the garage (and my race rig, the 14' box truck and 12' enclosed trailer). And hopefully I would figure out a long term solution of some sort in the meantime. I wanted to build a shop, however the cost was just too much to incur given the economy and the fact that this was a hobby shop not a business anymore.

So I pondered about it awhile and finally settled on the idea of a portable building. It would fit conveniently next to my existing garage, cost me only $50 for a permit from the city and not increase my property tax given its "non permanent" status. The next step was how to pay for it. I don't like debt ( translation = hate). The obvious thing to do trade one portable shop (the 14' race rig in the earlier pic) for this somewhat less portable shop. So up for sale it went. The guy that bought it actually used it to race AMA pro for a couple seasons and I saw it a few months ago for sale out west on another race forum. The important thing is it basically paid for my 24x14 building. (Woohoo, a place to tinker on my bikes again!)

The problem is I never really set up the building very well (or as well as I could have). A racebike build along with pretty much all my gear got tossed in it (see previous pics). A bit later some power and insulation, but the rest of the time until recently has been rearranging things as needed or as I cluttered it up badly enough to require a purge.

Fast forward to the last few months, a friend sent me a link to the "12 Gauge Garage" and that got me hooked on the forum. Ever since, I have been stealing ideas and getting motivated on making my small space more user friendly. I also have been pondering what to call my little space.

My whole family is very in touch with our German heritage (only 2nd generation in the USA) and so after some thought I settled on the name "Das Winzig Geschaft" or "The Tiny Shop".

I will do my best to update as the project continues. I hope to have it fairly well set up by the end of August.

I like that Norton!

Thanks! Loved that project right up to the day we were assembling the top end and my partner looked across the head (that was fighting installation tooth and nail) at me and said, " the cool has gone right out of this project...":D

Note: Found out several years later that bike burned to the ground in a shop up north waiting to be serviced.

Not many early pics of "DWG", but a shot of the 12' enclosed and another of my bikes out front of the building a few months after acquisition and gearing up for Road America 2010.

A couple more thoughts regarding this project. I have been kicking this around for a month or more, snapping pics, making notes and gathering resources/materials etc. Consequently, it may appear like I am getting a lot done in a really quick time frame when that's actually not the case.

I have a clip board full of very poorly drawn diagrams, layout plans and random dimensions. Most of theses "notes" seem to coincide with how much coffee was consumed or how labor intensive my 20 month old had been on a particular day.

(Yes the orange bike is a new acquisition project!)

Also, the wife and I have gotten very interested in the Tiny House movement's idea of "less is more" when it comes to living arrangements/dwellings etc.. I think this is a result of living in a small home and trying to make it function as well as possible daily, while at the same time not letting it become a cluttered mess. Quite a task with two adults and a toddler!

This carries over to the DWG as well, given its ~336 square footage. Also, while this is my workspace some of its area is still needed for storage for the family. Notably the loft area over the main work space.

With this in mind I have spent the last year whittling down my collection of bikes ( from 7 this time last year to 3 now, 4 if you count the orange GSXR project that followed me home from Iowa last month) while simultaneously attempting to get the attached garage and DWG loft area squared away as storage, and some type of usable space for the family en masse.

The hope for the attached garage is a place to park a streetbike, storage for daily use family items, and a small work space and play area for the baby and us on bad weather days when yard play is a no go. This is part of the overall project as I move forward too. In fact I spent the first part of June dealing with the attached garage, resulting in the mess you see in DWG in the previous post. I basically threw everything from the garage into the shop! However, progress was made!

Glad to see you one here. I remember seeing you on SVR in the past. GJ is a great forum, tons of awesome garages to pull inspiration from.

Thanks for the welcome! I think we may have done some horse trading in the past on SV parts on SVR ( you used to be up in northern Illinois or Indiana possibly?)

I agree, really like the forum and have already gotten some good ideas for the tiny shop.

Some of the decor' that will be back in the final arrangement.

My Grandpa Steckmann was a blacksmith when he emigrated to the USA and became a millwright once he arrived. He worked until a retirement at CPC in Pekin, IL. They worked in "gangs" and his was nicknamed the "C+A Gang". They had an ongoing joke that if all else fails when working/repairing something, "get a torch". His buddies made this for him when he retired, his personal torch and striker. I love this thing and the story behind it.

My brother has been corner marshaling at MOTOGP INDY and COTA and gets me a dickey every year.

Very cool! I raced a 2nd gen SV for a while out here with Chuckwalla Valley Motorcycle Club. Such a great platform to have fun.

Love the shop and the projects to. Hopefully I'll have my own bike shed in the coming months.

The great thing about bikes is they take up so much less space than cars!:D

Yeah, pretty sure I brought a wheel or something to the Chicago show a while back. I was in NW Indiana. Down in Chattanooga now.

Good to know, my brother has a retirement house planned in the Maryville area (12 acres in the Smokies) for next year after the Army is done with him.

Maybe we will cross paths again!

Repurposed heat unit the neighbor (HVAC guy) got for me!

Repurposed cabinet that will serve as a bench for grinder/vise etc and storage for chemicals so the lil one can visit the DWG safely. Gonna do a lil refresh on it and build a base to allow for storage underneath of oil drain pans.

Scored some 1950s Sears metal kitchen cabinets to go with the couple small Youngstown cabinets (long story for later) you can see in a couple shots. I intend to use them as a base for a small narrow bench top on the north wall of the DWS.

pics to come...
