I have this Columbian vise. Side says 603 (jaws are 3”). Inside base it has 603 2. Under swivel base it has 606 3 and the “M”. Any ideas on a time frame of production is appreciated

The opposite side will have word Columbian either vertically or arched. The vertical font is newer 60’s to 70’s. The arched goes back to war era or earlier. Prior to that it would say Columbian Hardware and jaws would be C shaped with screws vs T style jaws with pins like yours. The M symbol means it is made malleable. The vise is lighter due to this malleable process and hollowed out jaw towers. However, advertisements claim these are sledge tested guaranteed unbreakable.

Nice vise and I can see you are well underway in it's restoration. OBTW, you've come to the right place to ask those kind of questions. Really good folks here at GarageJournal....Welcome!

Sorry but I don’t know enough about them. Do you have more photo angles?

That Columbian woodworkers vise is a lot older than I first thought. It's from the (1930's-1940's) Columbian vise catalogs, not before or after. This catalog scan is from the site "RTM" listed above in the Columbian Vises catalog 40-A.

The vise model is actually cast in the middle of the front jaw, as seen in the photo. Use the catalog scan information to determine the model and size of your vise.

I guess at this point you could just measure. The dog in the front jaw is the little pin driven thing front and centered above the main handle.
