My daughter bought an old Fordson Tool Box. She paid $30 and for some reason she took a shine to it. I was able to tell her about the old Fordson tractors. We never owned one but remember others talking about the Major. Was this the one started with a shotgun shell?
But my daughter would like to know the year or span of years this would have been installed and was this a standard colour used at the time or a repaint?
Told her to supply me with some decent pictures. She got that covered :)

I've owned a pair of Fordson E27N tractors but my memory isn't sharp enough to be accurate, I think this box could be from one of that model. The Majors I've seen had a flat lid on the box (no branding). All of the Fordsons I've come across had manual crank handle or electric start, I think the cartridge start tractor you are thinking of was the Lanz Bulldog single cylinder horizontal from the same era as the E27N. Kelly and Lewis made the Bulldog under license in Australia.
Most? Fordsons were blue but industrial orders like wobbly cranes or tugs were often "safety" colors like yellow or orange. The paint on the box looks original to me.
Wiki has a big page on Fordsons.
This of course is only experience from Aus tractors, could be completely wrong about US models.

I have a 58 Dexta with a similar looking toolbox but mine is the standard blue color. It also has white rims.

Many Dextas and Majors came with rims, grill inserts and trim that were that color orange.

Can’t say I’ve paid much attention to the color of the toolboxes on the ones I’ve come across but I would say there’s a good chance that is a an original color.

If she is looking to repaint it though, always safe to use Ford blue.

There are some good Fordson forums out there, they exported those things all over the world after WW2 and are well regarded in Europe. I know mine was made in Dagenham England.

For sure someone on the forums could answer the question definitely.

Thanks guys. I have forwarded the info to my daughter. She is going to use it on their log for a mailbox. They live in a small town on a lake. So no flyer delivery much less postal delivery. Do not know about the refurb but will take a pic when done for the thread.

I have that exact same box. I have two Model A Fords and somewhat collect old Ford wrenches. I have several that are marked Fordson, and they appear to be identical to some of my Model A wrenches... hence my guestimate on the dates.

Just showed my daughter your reply. I’m visiting my new Grandson and while he is having a snooze, I’m doing the GJ thing.

The tractor that could be started with a blank shotgun shell was the English built Field Marshal, not the Fordsons. The US built Fordsons were battleship grey with red wheels. The toolbox was grey. I think they were built from around 1914 to 1927. Production continued in Ireland and England until the forties, I think. The English Fordsons were painted orange or blue with red wheels depending on the year of manufacture. You can probably get more accurate info from an antique tractor forum.

You’re welcome. I just finished watching an old rerun of Green Acres. The tractor featured in various episodes and referred to as a “Hoyt Clagwell” is actually an old Fordson. The opening credits feature a John Deere, but Ford sponsored the show so a Fordson was used when the episodes were filmed, at least that’s what I’ve read. Your daughter might actually see the entire tractor on there.
