Does anyone know when they switched from chrome to black cover plates ?
How bout when they started stamping 'professional' on tools ?
To negate some of the stupidness of my question here's a pic of two 5249's I got at a yard sale this weekend (2 bucks each). If that doesnt do it feel free to hijack this thread.

$2 a piece? What a steal!!! They appear to be in great shape.

Here it is apart. Standard stuff except for the double drive gear. It was in good shape. Some minor wear on the left pawl.

If you are looking for rebuild kits call Swif Co in el paso texas. They have a lot of Proto stock they even have new old stock wood handles and brand new wrenches in their leather pouch.

They also have hard to find tools and brand new wiltons. Its basicly a toy store for all who visit this board.

Explicit photos not withstanding, I myself, prefer to date females instead of ratchets.

I have heard of this place - and been to El Paso once, but doubt I would go back just for a tool store.

I bought the Urrea version. No. 544952N. 1/2" and 3/8" drive. As you can see from the stickers it is new.

25 years ago there was a Vogel Tool at 11221 Venice Blvd. in Los Angeles. It was a large tool store and had a lot of vintage and military tools. I saw the rat there. Could have been THE Vogel, but I'm not sure. As far as I know, they are gone.

I googled that address and came up with an active military cage code for Vogel Tool Co. including a phone number 310-390-8874. The same phone number is now listed to Youngs Refrigeration at that same address.

I did not know Urrea also had a 3/4" x 1" and 1/4" x 3/8". I would like a 1/4" x 3/8".

Wright has an open gear style 1/4" x 3/8", but it is pricey.

I was able to take the 3/8" x 1/2" Urrea drive gear and put it into a standard 1/2" Proto 5449.

Got a 5249 from a tool jockey at the flea market today. I has been well used and someone must have needed to use in in a close place since they ground down the brass selector lever. It has the square letters in the name. Finish is worn off the backing plate but I think iwas bright originally. Action is real tight, compared to my 1/2 drive Proto.

At the end of the last "o" in Proto is the "R" in a circle meaning regitered trademark. I couldn't read it in the picture and wondered what it was. I need to take it apart and clean it.

Also got a 1/4 drive old Thorsen ratchet, both for $6.
