Well, I got some info concerning the cost of adding a new meter and service from my electrical co-op (Pedernales Electric).

Thank you for your inquiry as to the cost of adding a second meter on your property. Since there is an existing pole and transformer so close, there shouldn’t be any additional construction cost. You will need to make application for the second meter and pay the application fee of $275 ($75 establishment fee and $200 system impact fee. The $50 membership fee and $150 deposit will be waived since you are already a member of the cooperative and have a good pay history with us). One thing you may want to consider is that each month you are charged a $22.50 service availability fee regardless of how much electricity you use. If you add a second meter you will be charged that fee on both accounts. Depending on how close the garage is to your house you may be able to hire an electrician to just combine the two services so you can keep one meter and avoid having the additional service availability charge.
I have a 150-170' run from the house to the shop. Would it be economically feasible to trench and run power from the house to the shop? What kind of cost (ballpark) am I looking at? This would help me avoid paying $275 for a separate meter plus $22.50 monthly ($270 yearly). I know it all depends on how much power I would need for the shop. The big power hogs would be my 220V compressor, MIG welder, plasma cutter, shop lights. Maybe a split AC setup too.

I'm planning to run cable from the house to the shop. The wire will be about a 200' run, the costs look to run in the $2-300 range, plus conduit, etc. Also a trencher rental is $150 for the weekend. I'm going to be lucky to get this run for $600. If that is the true cost, you'd pay it back within 2 years.

I contacted my co-op and hired their electrician to split 200amp service off from my wood shop, supply and install a new disconnect and trench 200' 4/0 wire to my new shop and hook into a new breaker... And it cost around $850. They supplied the disconnect, obviously in my bill, and all equipment to do the work. Took them one day and they talked me through everything they did step by step. I'm comfortable doing wiring but had never set up service so I felt that was a job left for a pro.
Sounds similar to what you were asking. You may price it with your co-op and see if they offer those services as well.

They trenched it about 36" deep. FYI. But I'm in Indiana.

I paid about $1,500 for the trench to my shop. But, there were obstacles to deal with, including: other buried electrical, water lines, asphalt driveway and rock. Total length ~100', much of which had to be dig by hand, 18" deep. That number included driveway repair too.

After talking to my contractor, it looks like I'm going to go with a new meter and hooking up to the pole next to the garage. My house panel only has two empty slots left (would have to upgrade the panel and service) and the run would require trenching 2' into rock (only have about 8" of topsoil).
Nice build. You will be glad you went with a separate meter. My FIL's garage has the power run off the house and if I have several tools running and the dryer and A/C are on in the house it trips breakers. PEC likes to rip you off as much as they can.

It's looking great. Always a good feeling getting the foundation in the ground. I hope that the weather cooperates and the crews can get going. It is surprising how fast the framing gets done with a good crew.
Are you putting drains in the garage floor? That is one thing that I wish I had listened to my plumber about. Anyway... Great build. Thanks for taking us along.
On a side note... your 60 is one of a few that is inspiring my 60 build. The rig really is cool. Excellent work.

I didn't think of a drain since the sewer line is so far from the workshop. I guess I could have had it just drain outside into the yard.
Yesterday, the engineer came over and did a pre-pour inspection. We're now waiting for the electric company to come over and inspect the grounding. We are scheduled to pour tomorrow morning!!
