Hi I just picked up an old Dayton 1Z707 bench grinder. This thing is built like a sherman tank. I was told it was from the 50’s or 60’s. Unfortunately its missing the right side cover and the tool rest(?) are missing. It runs well, kinda hoping to do some restoration to it.

I have attached pictures including the mfg label. Do any of you know about this unit? Maybe can tell me the age or online resources where I can find out about it and maybe find parts?

Dayton is the house brand for Grainger, so it was made by someone else. Usually a quality brand, not cheap junk. So look at other brands, the parts may fit.

I had one of those once. In my thread I don't think any conclusion was arrived at. Early Doerr might be one possibility.

My thread is here somewhere but it's like 14 years old.

Thats what I read somewhere. Another member said its pre 1963. One article said older rockwell parts may fit. I need the right side cover and tool rest. Its going to be a challenge to find… very cool looking american made toos so I could notnpass it up.

Does anyone know if the bearings can be replaced? Or know how to regrease/rebuild the grinder? I am totally new to these grinders and have never taken one apart. Thought I would ask before I venture in blindly. I am pretty good at repairing things in general so comfortable doing it.

Is something wrong with them? If not I'd leave them...

Well it runs and does not seem to be out of balance. However, when shut off, it only spins for about 15 seconds. I am pretty sure it should spin for 3-5 minutes, right. I was told this was stored in an attic for many years. Just thought it could use some fresh grease. Pretty sure these units are serviceable from other posts.

You can take the motor apart and pull the bearings out. They probably will remain on the rotor and slip out of the end bells. It may take a gear puller to get the bearings off the shafts.

Once off the shafts, the bearings can be inspected. They may be either sealed or shielded. Normally, bearings are replaced instead of regreased, because it is difficult to get the seals or shields removed without damaging the parts. Sometimes it is possible to be successful in regreasing, and it is done fairly often on woodworking machines. An internet search may give you ideas.
