Dayton Bench Grinder - This One Made in USA?

Hi all,

I'm looking for a bench grinder and want to buy only a quality made in USA unit. Sounds like the older Dayton and Baldor grinders are really good so I'm searching for a used one in excellent condition.

Does anyone know if the 2Z341N model was made in the USA? See attached pic of the label. It appears so, but I know how labels can be deceiving sometimes.

Thanks!

Can't find any info at Graingers. The replacement stock number is Chinese, but it's not the same...

Check with Grainger, but otherwise you can bet anything made in the last decade or so will be from China ever since they began to take over the world's manufacturing. In my experience, China's products are superior to those from most other countries and often better than those made in the USA at a higher cost. The price tag alone is no guarantee of quality, only wishful thinking.

May I ask what you are planning on doing with the grinder? What I am getting at is, if you only plan on using the grinder once a month to sharpen your lawn mower blade, then pretty much any grinder would be more than sufficient for your needs. On the other hand, if you are using the grinder day in and day out working on all sorts of projects, that's a horse of a different color.

OP . . . if you are NOT looking on CL every day for older Craftsman block grinder . .
. . . . you have NOT yet caught the GJ bug. :D

Your chances of finding and restoring a nice C-Man 1/2, 3/4 or 1 HP grinder are much higher than an obscure Grainger/Dayton grinder. Heck, if you can come up with "great story" about your "NEED" for grinder, maybe BlockHead of C-Man grinders will sell you an "extra" of his !! ;)

Buck: to get a built in USA DAYTON you'll have to get one more than a few years old i'm pretty certain. like CNG says a Craftsman block grinder (not the plastic imitation) is a good option and here's a thread that just talks about them so you can read for yourself. the old ones to buy are the ones made prior to 1980 and even the PRE BLOCK grinders are a good buy.

here's another thread of vintage grinders you might take a look at to get other ideas.

if you can find a used Baldor in good shape or afford a new one those are up near or on top in my book unless you want to move into the BELT GRINDER world which might be a big step up from bench grinders.

if you'd like to go in your GJ profile and put in your location you might find a local member might have an extra grinder to sell or trade something with you. while you are in your GJ profile click on Avatar and download a picture you'd like to see under your name on all your posts like my bison made of scraps and tools is.

I have an old 3/4HP Dayton Commercial that the data plate is stamped 1987, it's made in Taiwan... So if you want USA made it will probably have to be considerably older... It's extremely well made and weighs a ton.
