Dayton bench grinder

Just scored an old Dayton 4z909b 8" grinder, 3/4 hp 10.8 amps. Seems to be a stout grinder. Are they considered to be quality grinders?

Purchased a older 3/4 hp Dayton, the older models are rated output HP, thus the higher amps. Pulled it apart to clean and replace the bearings as I have done with older Baldor grinders I purchased. Windings look the same as Baldors, fit of material just as good. Only quaility difference, Dayton uses aluminum end housings and wheel guards, which make them a small step below Baldor grinders in that area. Armatures have the same approx heft to them, bearings the same.
You will be able to pass this grinder down a few generations.

I'll try and post pics later. Had to drive a ways to get it but for $80 I couldn't pass it up. The guy even included a new wire wheel, stone, and a craftsman stud remover. Is it safe to use a shop vac with the dust ports or is that just asking for trouble?

As luck would have it....I think the start capacitor just quit on me.

Nice find , what voltage does it operate on ? I just acquired a old Rockwell/Delta 1.5 hp grinder with castiron/steel pedestal but I need to get a variable freequency drive to convert it to work on 220 volt power .

Like Craftsman for Sears, Dayton is the house brand for WW Grainger. They didn't make most of their tools, but they used to be USA. I had a Dayton DP which was made by Boice-Crane. Today, they've gone offshore and this is made in Taiwan.

FWIW, I've got an old 1/3hp made-in-USA Dayton for light duty work in my basement shop for forty years and it was used when I got it.

Are you sure it has startup capacitors? My 3/4 HP Dayton is an induction motor. It takes a while to spin up but will put the fear into you when it gets up to speed!

ToddG, I'm positive it has a start capacitor. Its in the base mounted on the side, its a 150 mfd 125v starting capacitor. Found them online but can't seem to find one locally.

Jeeper, Nice setup, looks like a newere model than mine. Just curious what letter does yours end in?
