The blower fan motor in the furnace quit running. New one ordered already and delivery is tomorrow.
Meanwhile I took the old motor apart for inspection. My question is about the coloring of the wires. I've never seen a good motor with two different colors of varnish. I am assuming the darker windings are toast. Also the feed wires going to the windings were knotted up during assembly and the insulation was cracked off. (yes, it's going to recycle). My guess is the centrifugal switch mechanism got too sticky and it quit working and it ran in the starter mode windings only.

Prior to disassembly I connected the 120vac directly to the motor and it growled a bit. I gave it a push and it started turning very slowly and clicked and stopped in a few seconds, then started turning slowly again for a few seconds then stopped, etc. The automatic thermal protection seems to be working. Great it didn't catch fire but it smells a bit. It's been oiled every year but perhaps not always with the right type. I been using what i think is 30wt motor oil. Who knows what the previous owners used. This motor does not have your typical contact brushes like many power tools. The label says "Split phase ac motor".
