Glad I found this site. Really cool tools in this thread. I am looking for some direction on getting to and, replacing seals on a vintage Dayton hydraulic floor jack. I got the piston out and partially apart but I don't want to break or strip anything. I saw videos of other styles but not the same. Here's where I'm at so far.IMG_20230709_103635536.jpg

The threaded tube is on there really tight. The shaft IN the tube came out a bit but seems to be attached. I didn't see any seal four the outer tobe that was held on with just the ...cap? The cap has an O ring on the inside but no other seals. What am I missing on how this seals? Any assistance with this would be greatly appreciated.

Don't remove the threaded tube (aka the cylinder) - not only is it on there really tight, but you risk putting a flat spot in it. If you can get the innards clean without removing it, that would be preferable. The shaft (aka the ram) should pull out - you've probably got a torn up seal that's holding it. The outer tube (aka the reservoir) generally seals with just metal on metal contact - no additional seals. Some Loctite 518 on assembly is recommended.

Thanks. The "ram" came out about 2 inches and feels like it is attached or stuck really good. I will definitely leave the cylinder on. Already had marks from a pipe wrench? , That's why I thought it was supposed to come off. Any idea as to where I can get parts to rebuild?

You guys are awesome. So, looking at the drawing, the ram should just be "slid" in...not attached to anything? It will spin but really doesn't want to move in or out.

That's correct - it's not attached to anything. My guess is that the seal on the end of the ram has disintegrated and that, in combination with the other associated parts, are hanging up inside the cylinder. My only concern would be part #17 and 19, which may be steel, and could possibly scratch the cylinder wall - easy does it.

Sometimes they just need a little persuasion, Make sure the release in the “release position” so you aren’t fighting a vacuum. Next, find a pair of locking pliers that will clamp in front of the ball on the end of the Ram and use some taps with your favorite hammer to exit stage Left or Right depending on your orientation.

“IF” it doesn’t want to come, without knowing the history of the jack, it’s possible I suppose someone was into it first and has flat spotted the cylinder and the guide is hanging up. If that’s the case, you will need to re-assess the situation.
