The house we bought has an older Dayton gas heater in the attached garage. I don't have the manual and I'm trying to light it. I have turned on the gas and plugged in the motor. The fan will come on. I have a box that has a black dial and a read button. Is this the pilot? If so how do I use it? The model number is 3E402A. Thanks.

I'm taking a bit of a guess, but I believe you push and hold the red button, and then light the pilot. After the pilot burns for about 15 to 30 seconds you should be able to release the red button. The red button is the 'pilot out' safety that turns off the gas. It is a standing pilot model and no longer sold by Grainger.

That makes sense from what I was hearing when I was messing with it. I wonder where I "light" the pilot. There is no obvious spot. Thanks for the help.

I have a Trane, similar setup, that has a 4x4 (approx) cover on the side wall that opens to light the pilot. Follow the small gas line off the valve, it should go inside the heater to the pilot, and it should be pointing at the thermocouple. After the pilot is lit as explained above you will probably have to turn the black dial/knob to 'on' for the heater to run.
