I've had a 7" Dayton since 1980-81, and it is a great grinder. That one is a lot beefier than mine. If it runs good, I think it would be a good deal.

Marty: Dayton made in USA grinders are up there on my list of great old grinders along with the Craftsman block grinders just below Baldor. it looks like at 3/4 HP and with the metal shields and stand it would be worth the drive. get a few more pictures and some details on it's past use before you go out the door.

good luck

You sure it's only a 3/4? I Have an old 3/4 Dayton and that looks a hell if a lot bigger than mine.

-EDIT-

I was mistaken, mine is only a 1/4, haha. Damn, I bet that's a hell of a machine, my smaller Dayton puts all the bigger grinders to shame in my hangar.

Of course you should try to talk him down a little bit...after all it is craigslist. But still at 150 I would pick it up!

Just send an email. Hope he responds, I will take the drive after hearing what you and the others have said about it.

If one needs a grinder it is a fair price for the setup, IMHO of course.

Marty: did the seller of the Dayton 3/4 HP grinder email you back or do you already own it? i agree that it's a great grinder and looks like it's in great shape too. plug it in before buying it an see how it sounds turning it off and on a couple times. if there aren't any strange whining sounds or vibrations you might have just found your first good grinder.

one warning if you are using a wire wheel on one side please wear thick clothing and a full face shield because those wires can fly. the knotted wheels seem to lose less wires, but they take off material faster off your item so be careful. also another good habit to get used to is when you turn your grinder on stand to the side just in case the stone explodes. look up exploding stones on grinders on google or check out a thread i did on Grinder safety that has a pretty graphic video.

good luck as always

Dayton is a very good grinder, and also a really good brand of compressor, I have one of each.

Sometimes Dayton is labeled as Speedaire.

Hope the guy responded to your email (and that you're on your way soon), that's a terrific bargain even at $150.

With a little negotiating (bring variety of bills . . . :D), that will be awesome lifetime grinder.

Hope you get it.

I'd take 150 and try for $100.

I bought a 1 HP dayton of the same vintage for 40, but no stand. Make sure it spins up without a bump or you'll need a new capacitor or possibly a centrifugal switch.
