As a long-time reader of garage journal, I thought it was time to create my own thread to detail my garage/workshop/sheds.

First up a little background.

I’m coming up to the 10-year anniversary of being at this location and this year is planned to be a big one. The current house built in the late 60’s will be demolished and a new one built in its place. This will be a timber frame house and I plan to do as much of the work as possible while juggling family, work and other commitments. I hope to document as much of the build as possible. The part of the build I am looking forward to most is the garage which will be attached to the front of the new house. This will start as a 2-bay garage with scope in increase it to 4 bays once funds allow. This garage will also house a hoist and be primarily for “clean work” like detailing, servicing and storage.

At the rear of the property I have built my own “compound” This area is fenced off from the remainder of the property with a large sliding gate for access. Within this area I have 2 sheds. Both corrugated steel lined with steel/timber framing. The first which I will call the Workshop is roughly 10m (32ft) x 10m (32ft) and the other I which my mates have called the “86” shed is 10m (32ft) x 6.5m (21ft). What you might ask I need all this space for? Well I have a passion for Japanese Cars mostly late 80s to early 2000s as well as the odd BMW here and there. The area also allows for storage of my car trailer and Ute which can be a bit of a pain to store at times.

Note this is very much a work in progress and my photography skills are still developing.
Below is an exterior shot showing the compound area. Two cars currently stored outside (Nissan Silvia and BMW E46 Coupe) will be moved to the house I’m living in while the build occurs shortly.

The workshop

The workshop was never planned to be this big. It expanded as I ended up with more cars and equipment. Currently I am in the process of retrofitting insulation and lining the interior as its is basically unusable in summer since several trees were removed for the new house.
This is the workbench/storage side of things in the workshop. I hope to make some changes for better storage and make working a little easier.

Currently I’m storing 4 cars in the workshop which will hopefully reduce to 3 once I have the house built as I would like to have one bay open.

For those who are interested the cars are Nissan 180sx, Mitsubishi Evo 3, Mitsubishi Evo 5 and a Toyota Levin AE86

The “86” Shed

This shed came into being due to out growing the original workshop and the land that it now sits on being not used for anything meaningful. I had to raise the level with retaining walls roughly 600mm to 1000mm. With the experience I gained from building the workshop I did things a little differently like installing insulation as I was building and epoxy floor finish to make things a little nicer.

Steel racking, I built for storage running the full length of the shed. Still needs to be properly sorted and parts property stored.

With the use of wheel dollies, I can store 4 cars or possibly 5 if I really need to. Due to this it is intended for more long-term projects that won’t need to move for long periods.

Reason it gained the “86” garage name. It is home to 4 Toyota AE86s 2x Japanese spec coupes (1 Trueno and 1 Levin) and 2 x Australian Spec hatches (Both Levin’s)

Nothing much is planned for the near future. I would like to line and paint the walls at some stage and some storage in the roof space for large items like bumpers ect but this will be after more important work.

The Garage
This is the plan for the first phase which will be done with house build. Once complete I will frame up the open walls and install a hoist.

Down the track the 2 bedrooms will be moved to the future second story and that area will become a theatre and allow for an expansion to the garage. In addition, an extra bay can be added at the front making it a 4-bay garage storing 5 cars.

If you made it to the end thanks for reading. I hope to update as much as possible. If anyone wants to see anything, please let me know.

Cheers

Looks like a great project. Amazing how quickly things move off the front few pages and into the depths of the website. I think it was on pg 10 before I ran across it. Following along.
