De-greasing

Thought I'd share something I just discovered. I like to buy $2 mystery tool boxes and the like at auctions. They can be fun to hunt through but most are covered in decades of grease and oil. I've been using petroleum based solvents and the like to clean them off. Don't necessairly like that. My wife tried to get me to use Simple Green. I finally caved and now I'm a believer. That stuff is awesome. It cuts through incredible amounts of grease in no time with minimal effort. And it's relitively safe stuff. One warning, it will dissolve different amounts of certain paints.
Case in point... I bought a 1940's era shop/factory floor lamp. I was convinced that the hood around the bulb was down to bare metal. It was hard dried grease. I soaked it about 15 minutes under paper towels and it just slid off revealing something totally different.

I'm pretty happy with SG also, especially when not watered down....BTW, ACE has the gallon concentrate with spray bottle on sale for 9.99. I might pick up some this weekend....

I miss Ace Hardware. They pulled out of our area several years ago. They offered a lot the big box home centers just won't carry

Yep. Rust can damage chrome if nothing else...

on the simple green. I use it full strength for soaking, diluted in the ultrasonic cleaner, and in a spray bottle. I'd rate it even better than 409, but SWMBO doesn't like the SG smell, so 409 for household...

One of my plans is to replace my old solvent cleaning tank/basin with an old broke down roller tool box with a SS bar sink and a recirculating pump for parts washing. cut the sink into the top, mount a spigot, one of those goose neck jobs, and a reservoir. All I need is the box...
