I recently ordered a set of dead blow ball peen hammers and cannot hear shot inside of the head. Is there a chance these are not dead blow hammers or do they not all make noise. Everyone I've ever used you could hear. The description in the ad said that it is steel shot filled. Any ideas?

Could you post the link to said hammers? Some shot is finer than others. I do notice a different in sound between my TC and Snap on dead blows, it can be very quiet.

I am not an expert on hammers, but all of the dead blow hammers I have seen, have shot in them AND a "soft" face (rubber/plastic).

If you don't hear any shot/sand moving I would say you have a regular ball peen hammer with a plastic/fiberglass handle !

I can't really hear shot in mine (Stanley) but if you lay a piece of wood on the garage floor and smack it you can tell it's a dead blow because there is very little rebound whereas with my other hammers I would get much more. The piece of wood was probably 1/2" wide. Try that along with a few non dead blow hammers of yours and see what you get.

Well when compared to a standard ball peen hammer it has much less rebound when bounced on concrete but still has some. I assume that is normal?

Update... I just tried striking an anvil with these hammers and they act like standard ball peen hammers. I contacted the seller because they advertise them as #1 new product in dead blow hammers and mention they are filled with steel shot. Who knows if they will respond. Despite their price, they do seem to be very nice hammers, just not dead blow.

Mine still has some rebound but like I said much less than a regular ball peen. I have a HF soft faced dead blow where you can hear the shot and it has a little less rebound than the Stanley.

I bought a Snap On dead blow ball peen hammer last month. Shaking it like a maraca, you can definitely hear something inside. My first hammer of this kind...and it's awesome.

The Snap on dead blow ball peens are great. I've been using them for 10 years. You can't hear the filling inside and the handles are plastics with vibration absorbing rubber inserts. They make knocking out ball joints a very easy job.

Some like PB Swiss use metal washers moving along an internal rod.

They are awesome! Very different design than what I am used to.

My snappy doesn't make noise. My trusty cook makes very little noise but if you shake it By your ear you can hear it.
