I need advice on what weight to get. I have made up my mind to get a Trusty- Cook, I just don't know what size for my home shop. What is the most useful size 16oz, 24oz or 32 oz. I not a big guy but on the small side of average. Mostly I would use for messing around cars and what not.
Thanks in advance.

I bought trusty HF orange, and I think in addition to those sizes also got the 3 and 5 lb dead blows. I'm not driving rail road spikes, mostly the bigger ones are handy when you need more force, but don't have room to take a real swing. Sometimes a big one and a real swing are needed though.

Another brand that gets good reviews here at a modest price is Nupla.

Until I started seriously messing on my cars I had no idea how many different hammers I would end up needing. Not that a smaller number would "work", but using the right size and type is safer and more effective with less chance of damaging yourself or the item.

I wish I could get a bunch of sizes right a way but my modest tool budget this month will only cover one size. Danglerb - I think you have made a good point on when you need one bigger is or can be better. I have a feeling I will be spending some $$ over the next few months on expanding my hammer collection. Thanks for the advice.

if you can only buy one at a time, id get a medium weight, so you dont have way to much force, but also not way to little.

Of course if you got the big one, you can always control the force... you know by not swinging it as hard. :D

If I could only have one I would get a 2.5-3 lb. I have them from 1lb to 5lb. I have a four from Mac, one from Snap-On and several more from Harbor Freight. The orange ones from Habor Freight are as good any of the others. I've had a 3lb and a 2 lb Ive had for about 5 years from HF that have been used to death. They are great. Don't buy the black ones they are garbage

I rank Dead Blow hammers as the greatest inventions of all time just behind the wheel, fire and the condom

So, are the HF hammers any good?

+1 on the HF hammers being worth the money. i have a 2lb one and a 4lb one. i dont know how i ever lived without them. My 2lb one is beat half to death - i use this one the most all around...surprised it hasnt burst shot everywhere by now. I bring out the 4lb'er for more stubborn applications.... will probably pick up the other sizes down the road.

HF orange dead blow on sale are like $6 to $10, and so far no issues. For pounding on the end of a wrench etc. I doubt anything works better. I'm not experienced enough to know when a steel face would be a better option, or when I should be using a ball peen instead. (I've also got the $15 set of fiberglass handle ball peen hammers from HF).

Hammers still on my list of things to buy; two sizes of good slide hammers, brass hammer, and a set of body hammers and dollies.
