Dead Opossum--HELP!

I have had a nasty odor in a wood shed for a couple months. I figured it was rats or maybe bats. Well, today I found it. In the back corner was a dead opossum. I know the odor has been there at least a month. He was pretty nasty, fur falling off, blood had come out and soaked into the wood floor. So, that is the reason for the post. I cleaned with Dawn and water and then bleach and water. Any other recomendations for the odor? I really don't care about the "outline" of his body in the wood. But jeez, the odor is plain nasty...

Thanks, Tom

Try using an odor neutralizer like "odor ban". It has enzymes in it that will break down organic compounds and some sprays have other types of minerals the will break down the odor, also. I'm familiar with using the odor ban from experience. I think we bought it at Sam's, but other places have it.

Hi

Ordinary household baking soda works well. Put in a metal sheet with soda on top to keep the "soda area" large and try to enclose stink area with a plastic sheet. Will take some time, though. If the odor stuff is absorbed into wood, best bet is to replace the wood parts. Will take a long time to dissipate and be absorbed by the soda.

I can't find it now, but when I do, I will let you know the name of it.. It is made for cleaning up after dog and cat urine. Has enzymes in it and a great odor neutralizer. You'll probably need to soak the area with it and lay some rags on it and saturate them as well...

I would say the odor ban or an enzyme type cleaner and then cover the area with an oil based Kilz paint. I used the Kilz on our basement slab after my wife's cat decided to use it as a litter box. Put down 3 coats in alternating directions after scrubbing the floor. No smell---and no cat either.

Know what product you mean... it's called Nature's Miracle. I've used their stuff before when my dog has gotten sprayed by a skunk. You cad find it at stores like Petsmart:

One of the houses we sold, the previous owners had dogs and the urine smell in the utility room was a real issue as we couldn't get rid of it. It was sooooo bad, we were looking at removing the plywood down to the joists. Then we fould out about Zinsser's Odorless Oil-Base Stain Blocker. Two heavy coats of the product solved the problem!

Should solve your problem!

Try using some cheap ground coffee and let it sit a while, I've used it in confined spaces and seems to work pretty well.

I had a refrigerator that quit working in my camper and I could not get rid of the rotted meat smell after I got it fixed. A truck driver that we camp with told me to put coffee grounds in it to get rid of the smell. After trying everything I gave it a shot and it took the smell right out but it did smell like coffee for a little while. He said he would sprinkle it in his trailer and let it set overnight after hauling a stinky load (white castle burgers:D) and would just sweep it out the next morning.

This will do the deed, no maybe's or just-about's.

Hydrated Lime. Just dump the lime on the offense and let it set. The lime will pull the funk and hold it, after a week or more clean up. If there is still a problem drop the lime again.

Now, my possum story. When I was a kid we moved into a huge old house. (6500 sq ft) My Dad was a handy man type so he did all the painting and such. We were painting the "parlor" around the fireplace and my Mom said "Doug, there's something dead under the house." He says, "Woman, you're just smelling things again, leave me alone." Second night same story.... leave me alone.

Third night Daddy tells me, "My damn paint smells like Hell.... It must be going bad." We then decided to investigate under the house. We found a dead, turned-to-soup possum with three little poss-i thrashing around in the liquid she-possum.

After considerable gagging we managed to spoon the affair into a double bag to put out for the city to pick up on the next debris pick up day. The next day, after sitting in the sun, that bag had swollen until it was no longer black, but almost see-thru.

Daddy comes in from work and says we can't wait for the city, we have to take it up-town and put in a dumpster that will be emptied in the morning. So he backs the 71 VW Super Beetle next to the bag, tells me to grab the bag and "Whatever you do, don't drop that bag and let that **** spatter on my car!"

We ALMOST made it to the dumpster. I told him I couldn't hold on any longer and he pulled into a huge pile of brush a neighbor had on the street for city pick-up He says, " Set that bag down eeeeeaassssy." I do and we circle the block and head home. Then he says, "Don't tell you mama what we did."

O.K., everything is good, responsibility shifted, we are moving on. Mama is on her way to work and sees the people doing pick-up. She hears a loud scream and sees the guys running away from the brush pile like they were running from a bag full of possum soup.

After school that day she asks me what did "You and your Daddy do with that bag of possum???"

When pinned down you can't lie to Mamma..........

Can find that in the pet department of your favorite retailer. I don't know about dead possum, but if you have to clean up after an incontinent person it works great for laundry.
