I need to install an extra deadbolt in my front door (key access on exterior / lever on interior side). I would like to find one that does as little damage as possible if it is removed at a later date, or at very least, requires a smaller-than-standard through-hole.

I'm aware of some models that need only a 1.5" bore hole. However, it seems like one should be able to go much smaller given that the only thing in that 1.5" is the bar that twists...

Is anyone aware of an option that might work?

I don't have a better answer for your dead bolt issue.

I would be against a mortise lock. They take a lot of material out of the door if you remove them. you end up with a big hollow area at the knob. And they can be a PITA to install...

A hole is a hole. Why remove it later?
They do make large cover plates that go below the knob. So you could put it below the knob and cover later.
