Dealing with neighborhood covenants

A few years ago we were looking to sell our house and move into something with more space. We found a new construction in a brand new neighborhood. Nothing was said about a HOA until after we made our offer. Then the Realtor said "oh yeah they have a few rules" I started reading it and it had all sorts of crazy stuff in it. The big ones were no detached buildings and no working on vehicles on the property. The Realtor tried to play it off like it was nothing, and no one really pays attention to the rules. I said no deal and walked away. HOA's can be more trouble than they are worth.

Thanks all, they are HO rules, not covenants.. I'm not tying to be a pain to anyone... Seems to me they should just look at drawings before shooting them down.. When that happens, then I feel like " screw you" I'll do it ALL my way then..

First step is to talk to the HOA President or Architectural committee lead. Don't go in with the "screw you" attitude.

If you press ahead without approval you will lose big time. Fines, court order, lien against your home is all in your future. Followed by tearing down the illegal structure.
