Death by China - The Documentary

I just joined netflix and watched "death by china". It puts everything we've been discussing here in order. The movie slaps gov. and top corporate ceo's throughout but I was glad to see at the end a call to us individuals to think about what we buy. They interview people in the film who haven't owned a micro wave for years because they just can't find one that's not made in china.

I've always believed in the Power Of One and that we shouldn't just wait around for someone up top to change things, we should start living our beliefs on our own. I wonder what would happen if everyone in north america, Canada, USA and Mexico would stop buying chinese goods for one day a month. Would it cause a shock wave? How about 1 week per month?

The movie demonstrates there are a lot of people wanting to bring back manufacturing here, they think there is still hope.

It wouldn't matter at all if you just simply put off buying something for a day or a week...We really need to insist on buying american goods. But keep in mind that we will pay alot more for products then we do now....

If you notice though, all our motor oil and gasoline is still purchased from American owned oil companies. For some strange reason, the Chinese haven't infiltrated the oil business yet.

I am just a guilty. All the products we sold in my company for years were made in the USA. The company has been around since 1954. Begining in 2007 I started getting calls form Chineese and Korean brokers selling cheaper goods into the US. I passed and as a result my competion took a big check out of our company.

We managed to keep it going but had to begin to carry these out of the country brands to keep the company healthy.

Crazy when you can make more GM on the buy than you can on the sell..............

Not sure what the answer is when there is a demand for cheaper goods with little care for quality. I recently send a rep out to demo a 6K floor cleaning auto scrubber. We trucked it out, did a demo and asked for the order.

Customer went on line and found a chineese POC for $ 3,900.00. with a 30 day warranty which is basically NO warranty. Less features, no transaxel and no local repair shop. Very frustrating to say the least.

Cheap is cheap and it is hard to fight that every day.

Sorry but I am not paying money for all American Made goods. If the American product is comparable in price I will purchase it. If I am buyinjg a floor jack and a chinese floor jack is $90 and the American Made floor jack is $350, guess what floor jack I am buying.

A lot of times you can't even buy certain made American made goods, they don't exist! To produce them here would price them totally out of the market.

I keep wondering what the affect of their horrific air pollution, combined with their high percentage of tobacco use, will have a significant affect on their population.

Add in that there are a limited number of younger women and you could have a population that could be be in trouble in the next 10-20 years.

High cost of living and a stagnant economy for the past few decades have put Japan in a similar situation. Younger women are not getting married because they want careers. Those that are getting married are frequently having only 1 child. Japan's death rate is near or greater than it's birth rate.

Interesting I'll have to watch it. I have been trying to buy more American Made products especially tools. But I will buy things made overseas as well. It doesn't have to be an all of nothing type of thing. That and good luck finding a television made here. But really to me it's about just changing my attitude. Before I bought whatever was cheapest and when it broke I threw it away and bought another. But after the economy went south I started thinking that maybe I should try to support more of our own jobs and products. And to try to buy things that will last for decades. So it may be a just be an American made screwdriver set and a couple of wrenches but it's a start. And I know I'm at least doing something to help out. Even if it's just a little bit.
