I was directed to this site off another comedy site's diy forum. I'm impressed with the size and expertise with of this forum - all I found previously were 4-5 year old posts on random message boards.
I'm currently fixing up my parent's home in order to sell as they going through a divorce and it'll be 6+ months until my mom is ready to move out. The garage was a huge project on my list as my father had attempted to filter vegetable oil and run it in his truck. Now that I've cleaned, primed, and painted the walls and ceiling I think an epoxy floor is the way to go in order to complete the clean look and help to sell the house. My brother and I have both returned home during this process to help - myself from overseas, him from his ex-girlfriend. I don't own a car, but my brother is planning on doing all sorts of work to his cars. He doesn't know what's coming. I had planned on turning the garage into a storage room and parking everything outside, so other than some heavy duty shelves there shouldn't be much in the way of abrasive chemicals being spilled. Think of this room more as a museum.
The past couple weeks I've been eyeing the Menard's and Lowe's advertisements. On the 6th Lowes had 20% off on a water based epoxy product, but I wasn't impressed. Today I stopped by Menard's to pick up etcher, crack filler, 1 gallon of driveway degreaser, and professional dark gray floor coating. I'm going to look into renting a diamond walk behind grinder for a day. I've already powerwashed once to get white paint overspray off the floor.
The garage is roughly 450 square feet, but I didn't take into account the foundation. It's 20 years old and not sealed. There's also a concrete expansion line running in a cross pattern dividing the garage into 4 11' x 11' sections. There's only a couple cracks and a few holes.
So here is my problem and terrible idea:
I've only bought a single kit that says 300-400 square feet, I've read that a lot of people end up with excess material left over.
I'm not clear coating now, can I add this later? The main concern is budgetary reasons - I have a lot more things to fix (sump pump, refinish floors inside, wash and restain deck).
I have a freezer that is too heavy to be put inside and too full to empty. How terrible is it to try doing this in sections with only a single kit - for example separating the cans into 2 or 4 even amounts (4 or 8 new amounts) and trying to combine them later.
