I have numerous old decals that need restoration. I have made both high quality digital photos and scans of them and the results are what I consider good enough to begin fixing the dirt marks and tears. What software do you all recommend to fix my photos and scans to make ready for decals? In particular I would like software that will do good lettering without going pixel-to-pixel to get it right. Anything in the $100 range?

I don't know much about software so I can't help you there, but you might check with sign shops in your area. There is one close to me that can take artwork and print it onto 3M sticker material. That might be an option.

Check out http://www.gimp.org/ its a free vector image editor, much like adobe illustrator or photoshop. It has a little learning curve, but should be able to do everything you want without the pixeling for lettering etc.

Edit: Also if you want to pay someone check out http://fiverr.com/ they can do graphics for well $5 :D good luck!!

What ever you choose pick a vector based program. Scanning will only give you raster images which are all bitmap images. These are not sharp clean images. Vector art can be enlarged to almost and size and and are still sharp. I own a large format graphics company and we fight image quality ALL DAY LONG with raster files.

I restore old motorcycles and have had to recreate the art of various decals and I have HOURS if not DAYS of time redrawing. Once done correctly it can be used for many other uses.
