I was thinking about getting a 42" HF box to replace my old Sears 26" that was my entry level box. My wife sent me this text tonight. Is seems ok, assuming it is in ok condition. Thoughts?

Just judging by the fondling I did in the store they seem to be nice boxes but the drawer layout makes them a tough buy for me because I dont like the bottom drawers.

I think I could make use of them with some jig saws, sanders and heat guns.

I personally like that box a lot, drawer layout and all. I've seen it in person and feel that it's well built and priced competitively.

Drawer layout is a little messed up for auto mechanic tools. Too many shallow drawers needs a few more semideep drawers. Those two bottom drawers would be for cased tools only. Not sure wrench racks would fit in the shallow drawers. Might work for the diyer. Just cant see it working in a auto garage.

Their kind of flimsy boxes I beleive there the same as a husky box with a different paint job. Yeah the look good but check out the minimal spot welds on the seams finish imperfections. Drawer slides that bow when you push down on them.

The hf us general boxes are actually impressive for the price their a pretty sturdy well constructed box

But for about $1000 you could find a nice older snap on box on craigslist

Thanks. I am DIY that has outgrown my present box, not a pro.
I think I will try to use the HF coupon and if it works go with it, if not, then just wait.

With coupons you can get the HF top and bottom 44" combo for about $660, much better quality, better drawer layouts, just my opinion.

Don't get me wrong that dewalt box looks good and the same box painted Milwaukee red looks even better but the quality is just not the best even for a budget box

I put my hands on this one a couple weeks ago along side the Husky and Milwaukee and the Dewalt felt much "heavier" than the rest. Either has more / better internal structure to support the sheet metal or thicker sheet metal (the latter if I had to guess). I didn't pay to much attention to the drawer slides or size though and I haven't seen the HF box to compair

There is another thread on this box in recent days. If most HD's carry the same stock, this is not the same box they were liquidating last year. Those were 42 or 47", this year's model is 55".

These boxes are decent but what bugs me about these and last year's also, the 2 bottom drawers have double slides for 200 pound capacity, but they only open halfway

Apparently there is stops on the bottom drawers to keep from tipping. I have also read that those can be defeated to allow full opening.
