decent fluid pump for filling transmissions, diffs, etc?

I dont mind the good workout that the bottle top pumps provide, but I would prefer not mixing hobbies. The bottle top pumps are just too slow, flimsy and dont fit all the bottles tops. I'm almost tempted to use one of those water cannon toys, but there has to be something out there that exists already. Any suggestions?

Lincoln suction gun. Accept no substitutes (at least all I've tried ****. Well, actually they don't ****. But a cheap parts store one *will* push fluid into a trans or rear, but if you're going to spend money you might as well get a decent tool.

Make your own out of a weed sprayer. I removed the sprayer handle, inserted a barb-pipe thread adapter into the end of the hose, then a ball valve, then another pipe thread-barb adapter, and then several feet of clear vinyl tubing.

Close the ball valve, fill it with the prescribed amount of oil, pump it up, insert the end of the tubing into the filler plug, open the ball valve, and then go do something else. Come back once in awhile to pump it up again until your transmission or differential is full. If you put exactly the right amount of oil in to begin with, you'll just have a few drips from the filler plug.

I made two, one for GL-4 and one for GL-5. They cost about $15 each to make, maybe $20. A one gallon sprayer is typically about $10. Mityvac and Motive Products and probably others make essentially the same thing but you pay a lot more.

just got one of these at a garage sale for $1... Mr. GoodPump

They carry that at Harbor Freight. Usually goes on sale for @$4.00 once or twice a year. Used it twice and it does what it is supposed to do just fine.

Like the OP, I am also looking for something to fill diffs and other gearboxes.

I have a suction pump already and can't imagine using it to fill diffs. I am surprised that many here recommend that method, which seems like it would make a huge mess.

5 gal pail pump.

I have an old metal one but you have to stock 5 gal buckets of whatever fluid you pump.

I made an electric transfer pump out of a diesel fuel transfer pump and it pumps gas, diesel and 180 weight gear oil.

The biggest problem is working on your back if you don't have a lift.

I also use bottle top pumps. Hate them. But suction pumps look like an even slower way to do things, especially with viscous gear oil ?

I use one of these. I think I paid $15 for it and it came full of 80/90 gear lube. I see those and smaller versions all the time at auctions go cheap...a little large for the occasional use but bigger is better right?

Don't **** the fluid with the suction gun, unscrew the top and pour the fluid in. Then push it into whatever you're filling with the plunger. So really any cheap gun will work but I recommend the Lincoln because it will actually **** up fluid if you need it to, unlike the parts store ones.

I cut the top so that a piece of hose fits snugly inside the pointy part and slide the hose in so that it reaches the bottom of the bottle. I then punch a hole in the bottle near the top and gently pressurize it with the air gun.

I tried that once with a small bottle of Mobil 80W90 gearoil. It promptly grenanded in my face and covered me in gearoil. Never again!

Hence the emphasis on gently! I could be flirting with danger every time I do that but so far I've gotten away with it. As my dad has pointed out that doesn't necessarily make it a good idea!

I have the Wilmar version of this, its pretty handy for sucking out transmission fluid and pumping new fluid back in.

it almost seems like more work to fill you suction gun up to then pump it in the diff or whatever..and i dont like cross contaminating fluids

I work out my fore arms and kung fu grip with the bottle tops, luckily anything i do is only 2 to 4 quarts..

in best Hans and Franz voice "were here to pump you up"

By the Way
That harbor Freight thingy is a pile of ****..

I'm surprised no one is using a Fire Extinguisher ......just put a Schroeder valve in the top so you can add air pressure......put a hose on the trigger.....and only use about 10-15# of air pressure......

That's the way we did it at the race track for years....

The best is Assenmachers fluid filler. It ain't cheap, but if you're doing a lot of fluid filling on various vehicles, its worth it.

CRC/Sta-Lube SL4344 Pump

Works good, last long time. What else is there to say?

What else to say? They **** to pump 5 quarts of trans fluid up into a ford transmission, have to push the pump a million times. Also **** to pump thick gear oil into diff.

That's exactly what I did.

However, I also added a Schrader valve and a pressure gauge. Hit it with the air chuck and run it up to 20 lbs. No fuss no muss.

If its your own vehicles you probably don't do this very often. I have had good success with these filling differentials and standard shift transmissions. Cheap and easy and not messy at all, so what if every few months (or years more likely) you have to spend a few minutes pumping it.

Mine is old school. One of my Dad's passed down tools. Messy as hell but, everytime I use it, it reminds me of him and puts a smile on my face.

Unfortunately those bottle pumps don't work with all bottles, for example redline bottles, suction gun works with everything and is easier than fiddle farting around trying to find a bottle that your pump fits.
