Hi guys. About to replace my 15 year old PVC air lines with black pipe. Any decent pipe threaders out there for the 150 buck mark? I would rather buy one, than rent one.

I have a 40 year old Craftsman set, and a couple of rigid sets. Now, I just by pipe at HD or Lowes, and let them do the cutting and threading. Threading pipe is a real pain, unless you have an electric threader. Not worth the hassle and effort. I would rather pay an additional $50 - $100 for the job than to thread pipe for hours on end.

Build it with black pipe and ******* from the store. Figure your drops, and use standard lengths for everything. Get more than you need and take the left over back. Way easier and actually cheaper than cutting and threading pipe.

If you are going to have a lot of threading to do just rent an electric Rigid model 300 or similar. You will be able to set the knives so that you are getting the correct number of turns into the fittings, so you won't have potential leak issues. Fittings vary so greatly it is really advantageous to be able to set the knives to the fittings you are using to get the correct thread engagement. You are able to do all of your cutting and deburring in one shot as well. I would not use a ratcheting threader for doing an entire garage unless it was something I already owned and was trying to save some money.

Otherwise I would cruise Craigslist for a Ridgid pipe pony or a Ridgid ratcheting set.

why not use copper?.........that black pipe always looks like **** on the inside after a while.
If your looking for a decent power threader for $150 good luck, maybe on cl.
I have a ridgid hand held that you clamp the pipe in a pipe vise slide the threader over the pipe and hang on to it, maybe you could find something like that on cl, i don't know.
I paid over $600 for it in 1991, been a great tool, has 1/2,3/4, 1 and 11/4 dies. i don't know the model number without going out to the barn.

I used this one from Harbor Freight (95955) to thread all of the gas piping in my house as well as the air lines in my garage. I had no issues with it other than the oiler was a POS and leaked so I used another. The air line main runs were 1". I see you are in Canada so availability may be different for you.

I have one like that Not sure what brand it is but it works good, groans with 2 inch but I rarely use it for that. I buy most *******, have a hand set too which I could use in this kind of project as I would get as much ready made as I could.

There is a competitor that makes this knockoff clone. I bought mine from a Jet dealer maybe, equipment dealer. It works.
If I was the OP though would be looking for simple hand even import to make a few threads and then becomes handy for clean up dies the rest of its life.

I went to plumb a pressure vessel change out, first they couldn't wait to send me on a chase making threads. We had so much stuff when all was done made one out of 50.

By hand design well, chop a 10 in half and you only got to make 2 etc. The ******* are super cheap and one of the box stores had a super selection on length to the half inch for a dollar.

It doesn't hurt to power wire brush fittings a little, it smooths them up and lets them slide together without sticking. Small bore is fit with 440 channelocks and often dress some dope on it, run it down snug, back it up, re dope a bit and run it down, it polishes and forges over some ruff stickies.

Hand threading a few fittings doesn't scare me either, in the end the simple cheap cost is worth it. And that is from someone that has power.

I know one thing you have to do a whole bunch of hand ratcheting to really appreciate a power threader..........I have a hand set also but i don't think i've used it since i got the power threader (1991)

My wife drug home an old antique looking ratchet threader from a yard sale. I tried to give it to my bro-in-law who is a plumber, he wouldn't take it.

Yes! This is what i'm looking for. I might have to order it from HF tho, as our canadian version PA does not have the same unit. I don't even care if i get a manual one. The problem is, when my friends come over and see the install, i'll be doing theirs as well, i'm sure.
