Lately I've been going through my tools and upgrading/replacing some of the stuff I have, and I just got to the puller drawer. This is the one I have now,it was given to me many years ago:

It works fine, but over the years many of the pieces have walked away from the set,so I'd like to replace it. Can anyone recommend a similar set that's a decent price,or should I just get another one from HF?

For that price, if the only problem with the set is pieces got lost over time, I vote for buying the same one. Hell, buy 2 so you have spare parts.

I bought the same set 6 months ago. I figured if I had problems with it, I'd get something nicer. So far my only complaint is I wish it had a better tray/case.

Id say if you had good luck with your Current HF Puller buy Another one, I cant see how $14 bucks is gonna hurt you either way. I picked up a Snap on set that looked real similar off ebay for $50 bucks shipped, Ebay is flooded with those pullers most of the Time FYI.

I have a snap on puller like that (only better) that I can part with

when I have tried to use the HF version for pulling something really tight like a gear that have stripped. the snap on version does not

for steering wheels they are fine

I balance crankshafts, and I install and pull a lot of balancers, and in my opinion the Snap On is by far the best.

I have a lot of pullers from a lot companies and none hold up as well as the Snap Ons.

I dont like the old style pullers like Snap-On has. I use one made by Fluidamper I bought 15 years ago that looks like the one pictured. Removing and installing mega dollar balancers in expensive crankshafts can be a critical move especially in big block chevys. I like these because you can remove and install without a cone in the end of the crank. As much pressure as it takes on BBC engines to remove it's a crank saver. I'll never go back to a old style puller. This one isn't exact but bearing pull in both directions.

If you don't use it very much. This one will be fine for steering wheel use. Heck for the price you could get three of them. I am always concerned about using anything HF that when it fails could cause you harm. That means for me pullers, breaker bars, prybars, ect. are a no go. YMMV

Typically on the aftermarket balancers I hone the bore of the balancer to give the specified interference fit with crank, as supplied by the balancer manufacturer.

For the last few years I have been using a hydraulic puller/installer I made similar to one that ABS offers. It takes most of the work out, especially installing them. Some balancers require heating in an oven to a specified temp..

Some are just a pain.

In regard to typical pullers s I said I would take the snap on over any other I have used.
