Decent telescoping bore gauges that aren't $$$$$?

Hey y'all.

Anyone have a reasonably priced set of telescoping bore gauges that work well? I need a set.

My go-to for metrology is Mitutoyo, but I just can't bring myself to spend $200 on a set of what is, ultimately, a very simple tool.

I would look for pre owned on e-bay. I picked up a nearly perfect Starrett Last Word indicator for a fraction of a new one. Came from a retiring machinist that took pride in his tools as do most machinists.

PEC makes a set in the US that's ok, but a little rougher than a B&S or Starrett.

Still, I can get decent repeatable measurements with them.

Yes in theory a very simple tool. If the fit and finish is not great then the movement is jumpy and the readings will not be good. I've tried some of the cheap imports with poor results.

I have a nice set of starrett's I bought used.

I have a set of craftsman from the 80's they held up fine.
They are used to check ride height on formula cars. So I bought a HF set 6 years ago had them in my toolbox and from the vibration driving from one race track to the next they fell apart, went to use them for first time had handful of parts.
If I needed a second pair I would look at Travers import ones. But for critical measurements I use a dial bore gauge.

Starrett, On any tool that you're trying to measure down to the 0.0001 of an inch with you simply have got to pay the piper. For precision measurement tools close simply isn't close enough. Life ***** that way. Digital dial bore gauges might be cheaper and better. Might want to check into them.

I've got a set Craftsman(not sure what era but pre 80's most likely) that are fantastic. Only one side moves making for easier setup to measure or in my opinion they do. You can find them on the bay for reasonable prices.

After much searching.. I bought a set on amazon for cheap. $25. Comes in a plastic case, which I greatly prefer over a pouch. If the gauges themselves ****, I'll just but a Mitutoyo set and store them in the nicer case.
