Hi,
I just bought a house and decided to put a protective coating on garage. I been reading and watching Youtube on floor coating and narrow it down to either 100% solid epoxy or Polyurea coating.
For 100% Epoxy (from EpoxyMaster)
  • 1st coat: Primer
  • 2nd coat: Epoxy with flakes
  • 3rd coat: Polyurethane topcoat with anti slip

For Polyurea coating (Nohr-s or SPGX)
  • 1st coat: Primer
  • 2nd coat: gary polyurea with flakes
  • 3rd coat: clear polyurea with anti slip

Which method would you guys recommend for floor coating?

To give you a side note, this is my first time doing the floor coating. Also I will be preparing the floor with diamond grinder (rent from home depot).

Thanks in advance!

Your first option would be a thicker overall floor coating system and will take the most abuse. It's an excellent choice for a very busy garage with automotive repair, projects, and etc.

The second option is still very good and easier to apply since you don't have to worry about pot life. It makes for a great choice if you are only doing light automotive work, projects, and etc. It's also a good choice if the floor will be exposed much to U.V. light since polyurea is U.V. resistant. It will not amber if you like to leave your garage door open for extended periods of time.

Since this is first time for me, which method is more forgiving to mistakes?

Polyurea. We have folks tackle our Nohr Kit that would not even consider epoxy.

And where it might lack in mils thickness it more than makes up with much greater chem and wear resistance. Mils ain’t everything.

Like I mentioned before, is it more forgiving on mistakes created by inexperience?

SPGX would be the most forgiving since you just use it like paint. Self priming, no primer required.

Our SPGX has long open times since it's a moisture cured product, not catalyst cured. We're not aware of any client having a problem with working time ever with SPGX. It basically applies like paint.

Epoxy and polyurea products both have advantages. With an epoxy product you get a thicker overall system, but is that an advantage in your case? With Polyurea you get outstanding UV resistance, chemical resistance and it is tough as nails. It is also MUCH easier to install.

The two companies you are looking at are good companies with good products.

For me the decision always comes down to who is doing the install, how is the product being used, what the condition of the floor is and what your expectations are.

In most cases I lean towards a polyurea product. There are a couple of factors that can change my mind on that. (a) What condition is the floor in. If you have a heavily damaged floor that will need repair, an epoxy does a better job hiding 'imperfect repairs and minor imperfections in concrete.' The second is the chemical resistance chart. Read it. If you happen to be using something that does not work well with the polyurea in question, go with an epoxy and a urethane top coat that has a better rating for your specific application.
