I know I'll probably get biased opinions, but I'll ask anyways. I will be celebrating my 10 year wedding anniversary in July, and my wife asked what I wanted for my 10 year present. She will be upgrading her ring, and I told her I wanted to do a complete garage makeover. She then asked if I would rather have a dedicated home theater room. She is giving me a $5k budget, but I have to chose one or the other....what would you do?

She would get more use out of the home theater room, but she has given me the go ahead on whichever one I want to do.

That's a big HINT. After 10 years you should know SOMEWHAT how women talk. LOL. Make the wife happy and you sir will be happy

A garage can look a lot better with $50 worth of paint and $200 worth of epoxy floor. If you can even swing $500 for a small garage makeover budget, you could really do a lot! Then 4.5k for a home theater could still work nice!

What is most important to her? Ask if she would rather have the tv room or the ring? Seems to me that diamonds are out there on the date range of anniversary gifts, like 50 years... Is her ring up grade also $5k? Back off on both the budgets and get all 3 done. It's up to you to figure it out. How we live our relationship would be totally foreign to you as you two are not my wife and I. We have never counted the dollars to make sure we each get an equal amount. Years ago we put together a wish list/dream list. Mine, hers, and ours. Over the years we have accomplished most of it.

Does the garage makeover include new tools/machines? If so, I'd opt for the garage makeover... She gets an upgraded ring, you get to work in your updated garage with some new toys....

ok,
been married a long time so here is how you play it:

Honey, I need the garage makeover to have the space, tools, equipment, etc. to build you the ultimate "home theater room/space" and all the "other things" you will want made eventually.

good luck............

..think you'd get more fun for the $ with the theatre or garage makeover that some lil rock on one finger...only the jeweler wins there.
...never saw the importance of expensive jewelry,...a simple gold band should tell the story.
...just my 2cents

Def depends on the current state of your garage. What are you working with?

It's a standard 3 car garage. We just bought the house 6 months ago, and the garage is driving me crazy. My old house had a 2 car garage, and I got a deal on slat walls that I could not pass up, so I covered the garage with slat walls. Now, I am back to basics, with white walls and a basic floor.

In my opinion if you've got $5,000 to spend, I would choose the garage, your money will go a lot further there. $5,000 in my opinion isn't enough to do a home theater room properly unless you are just wanting to do a TV/Projector and surround sound system. I did a lower budget home theater room, and got extremely good deals on all the equipment put into it, and I was still well over your budget.

In terms of use, I use my garage every single day, and our theater room is like once or twice a week.
