I completed my deck on May 14. I completed the stairs on June 1. About how long should I wait before it is safe to finish it? Also, what grits of sandpapershould be used. It looks like we are just going to use Thompsans Water Seal. My wife kinda likes the natural look.

Thanks for any help.

We have not chose anything yet. Thompson’s is just the first thing I think of. I am really just wanting to know how long you should wait till you seal the wood?

I've looked at the "Yellawood" PT products at THD literature and they state that as long as waster does not bead on the surface, you can stain/seal.

I'm not sure what PT manufacturer you have, but this might be start:

Do some research on stains and sealers. There's a lot of information out there. Generally, the more opaque the "stain" the longer it will last. Even solid stains will have to be re-applied at a regular interval. Wood finishing is really a high maintenance deal, which may or may not be a problem for everyone.

PTW wait 6 months before doing anything. Then use deck brightener and clean the deck by light power washing. After it is dry to 12% it is ready to seal. Best sealers are Ready Seal Natural or Armstrong Clark. Expect to clean and stain every 2 years.
Thompsons product is not recommended! It contains parafin.
